Heat went out on rack...HELP
So i woke up to my herpstat beeping....I go and check on it and the temp is low. I check out the rack and the built in heat has gone out. The heat source was built into the shelving. I was wondering how to to rig something. The rack itself is 1/2 in XPVC. Would putting heat tape on the rear exterior heat it up enough for my BPs? Looking inside there are no gaps on the side or back of the shelves. Would cutting into the shelves a bit hurt the sturdiness of the rack?

Unless you built the rack there's no way to know what material can safely be removed.
Unless you also keep species, such as BRB's, that need to stay cooler I would just set the HVAC to bring the room temp up into the low 80's for a few days until I could get the heat fixed in the rack.

Re: Heat went out on rack...HELP
you will have to run the tape pretty high to get enough heat transfer if you have it on the outside of the rack. I'd just order replacement tape and reinstall it.

Have you tried plugging the tape into the wall just to make sure your thermostat or probe didn't go bad?
Photos of the rack/take would help but it should be replaceable unless the builder was a total idiot......

Matt,
With out photos it's kind of difficult to visualize your situation, but one thought would be to purchase a space heater and heat up the ambient room temperature. If it makes sense can you put the rack into your closet or bathroom that way if you get that space heater set up you wouldn't have to heat up your whole house.
Good luck

Another thought is if you have an incubator can you place the snakes in small tubs and place them inside your incubator.
