    Question Measuring & Increasing Temps?

I'm using a 150W CHE (on a 600W pulse proportional thermostat) and have two digital thermometers, the probes are just outside of the hides, but it seems as if people put the probes inside the hides? I'm getting a temp gun in a few days, will that be able to measure the temps inside the hides? Also, what materials are safe for covering a screen top on a glass (Exo Terra) vivarium as i need to rise the hot and cold side temps by around 3 and 9 degrees respectively (temps are currently 77.5F and 81.1F). I'm getting my BP in 5 days so want everything to be correct before he gets here. Thanks.

I like to use reflectix. I find it holds heat and humidity very well. Some people also use tin foil.

You could also cover with plexiglass that is cut to fit your screen with just enough room for the che dome. What is the middle of your che over? The hide or the ground? Where do you have your thermostat probe?

I used tinfoil with mine but that stuff mentioned above ,Reflectix, looks much better. I'd use that if I could get it.

I always put the temp probe inside the hot hide to take an accurite temp of where they spend alot of the time.

And yes a temp gun will be perfect for measuring temps inside and outside of the hides.
When you get the temp gun and get the inside of the hot hide to a good temp make sure you check the temp of the top of the hide underneath the lamp because it can get pretty hot on there . Specially under a 150w CHE.
Also have you thought about putting a heat mat on the hot side aswell to get your temps up in there so your CHE doesn't have to be on so hot ?
    Good luck

    Re: Measuring & Increasing Temps?

    Thanks for all the replies!

Temp update: Cool side is 79F & hot is 82.6F and still (supposedly) rising; the lamp has been on for about 3 days (my thermostat is set to 92F), how long does it usually take for temps to adjust?

Alexio: I'm guessing this is pretty much the same stuff? Also, my humidity is perfect at 55%, would the insulation make the tank too humid?

chrid16371: The middle of my CHE is over the hide and the thermostat probe is just outside the hide. The thermometer probe is on the other side of the hide about one inch away, near (but not touching) the glass.

Scottywelsh: I have considered a UTH, but I'd obviously have to get thermostat for it (about £50) and as I've already spent a fair amount of money of my set up I don't really want to get one unless I have to. However, I would definitely buy one if that's what it takes to achieve the correct temps.

    Re: Measuring & Increasing Temps?

Your thermostat probe needs to be where the middle of the che hits bc that will be the hottest spot, same with your thermometer probe.

    Re: Measuring & Increasing Temps?

The probe next to the glass is the thermometer and the probe coming out of the hide is the thermostat sensor.
How would you advise I make the probes more central?

I mean no offence by this but I have to disagree.
If your stat probe stays in the same place and set to 92 and the hot hide was 90f then it doesn't matter where your probe is as long as wherever it is the hot hide stays in a safe temp. So if you move the probe around the hot side to wherever you want it, as long as your still remaining a safe temp, it shouldn't matter. Just my opinion
I would add tho that I would move the stat probe from there as it can get moved very easily or buried and what not. When I had a exo terra I put the stat probe pretty much where your thermometer probe is

Forgot to say cool side is great. Hot side is not lol
After a couple hours your che should be giving the right temps never mind 3 days. If you've never used a thermostat before please note that the temps on the thermostat dial don't mean anything so setting it to 92 on there doesn't mean you will be getting 92 in the viv so maybe turn it up if you can.

I will agree with that 100% but the thermometer probe should be wherever is hottest, your absolutely right the thermostat probe wouldn't matter as much. I would hang the thermostat probe under the che down closer to the floor or top of hide and adjust it until your thermometer is in the safe zone where it's hottest.
