Is this thermometer okay/why is UTH not working?

First, I can't figure out what kind of thermometer and hygrometer to get. I just know it has to be probed. Is this one okay, or is there a better one on Amazon?

Also, my snake has a Zoo Med repti-therm under tank heater on one side of his tank, and even with the thermostat cranked up it just barely seems to heat the inside glass of the tank. My substrate is only about half an inch thick there. How warm is it supposed to be? Should I tape it tight to the tank instead of just using the sticky side it came with?

Edit: I already have a therm/hygro but was informed it was not the right kind.

And I would wait to make judgements on how warm it is until your get an infrared thermometer like the I've I linked. Remember people are 98 degrees core temp so temps that snakes like may not feel warm to us

i'm not familiar with that thermometer/hygrometer combo, but i'm sure it works fine. u can always use a tried and trusted Accurite. alotta peeps use that. i use this one in my 2 tanks to track ambient temps and humidity - https://www.amazon.com/BeGrit-Thermo...7240452&sr=8-1 i use a generic version of this https://www.amazon.com/Zoo-Med-Digit...7240622&sr=8-2 for my probed hot spot thermometer.

i use a laser temp gun to spot check temps. even tho the surface temp may not feel hot or warm to the touch of my hand b/c my body runs @ 98degrees, the probe and laser temp gun tells me my undertank heater and thermostat is working, nice, warm and safe for my BP's at 90degrees or so.

What is the temperature of the glass UNDER the substrate?
Tape does not ever go in an enclosure!!

Oh no, I mean should I tape it on the OUTSIDE so it sticks harder to the bottom of the tank - although there would be an air circulation problem... Otherwise my setup looks exactly like the drawing - which was very helpful when I set up the tank, thank you. I'm just going to get a temp gun along with the new therm/hygro which will probably solve everything. And oh. Oh wow. I never even stopped to think that my temperature is 98 degrees. Dear lord, I feel stupid.

    Thank you for the links.

Re: Is this thermometer okay/why is UTH not working?

I use the acurite 00891 and put probe under substrate on hot side and the rest of the unit on cool side and it gives you your hot temp, cool temp, and humidity all from the one unit. They are $12 on amazon and give me the same temp readings as my Herpstat and VE thermostats so they are very accurate. I use temp guns also but I like to be able to see all my readings just by glancing into the cage.

Re: Is this thermometer okay/why is UTH not working?

I had the same problem with an UTH. Set up just like the picture and had been checking it with a thermal gun. The readings were different even after an hour of leaving it alone. Some were reading 92 and others only 76. So I ended up ditching the UTH and I've just been using two ceramic heat emitters. One on each side and have been getting the proper Temps. I also use an acurite thermometer and hygrometer and check the Temps at least once a day with the thermal gun to make sure it's reading right.
