    Inhumane Society..

My respect for the Humane Society of the United States has gone down the tubes. They are turning into an animal rights organization, and they are doing the animals more harm than good. I read this article where they euthanized more than 100 herps without trying to place them..

    Re: Inhumane Society..

That is disgusting and I'm really starting to reassess my lifelong support of the Humane Society. How dare they decide that an animal is better off dead than a pet just because they don't think that type of animal is pet material. Since when was pet defined as only a dog or a cat???? If the creature is not illegal to own then they shouldn't have a right to deny ownership and euthanize a huge group of herps like that!

My oldest son is very allergic. We can't continue to have cats for his sake. Our landlord prefers we don't have a dog. For us our snake is a wonderful pet and fits our lifestyle perfectly as do our 3 pet rats.

I've had a couple of experiences with our local Humane Society that are causing me to wonder what their agenda is. I can tell you that the volunteer hours I was planning to do this summer will be done somewhere else and I think I'm going to stop promoting them as the agency to turn to. I recently posted on a thread about a bad pet store to call the Humane Society. Having read this (and Adam's comments as well) I wish I'd never suggested it!

Darn that just makes me so mad!

That really burns me up. To read that they put down a bunch of healthy animals like that. They would never dream of doing that to precious puppies and kittens unless they were sick or incorrigible.
I am extremely grateful for specific herp rescues, as well as those of us who find ways to rescue mistreated reptiles and other herps; We are the ones who deserve confiscated herps, not the two-faced "humane" society.

Yeah.. I can't stand those animal rights companies that pose as animal lovers. I read that almost every animal that lands in PeTA's care is euthanized.. they aren't animal lovers, they're people haters.

    Re: Inhumane Society..

To clarify, Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) is NOT affiliated with your local humane society in any way, shape, or form. They are an extreme "animal rights" group affiliated with PETA that does not run, train, fund, or own any shelters or animal protection or rescue facilities. They are a political group. Your local Humane Society is just as worthy of your support as it ever was. In this case, the local Humane Society seems to be more in need of education than support, or may be too overrun with the PETA/HSUS-type folks to be effective anymore. The American Humane Association supports local shelters and suffers from folks confusing it with its radical offshoot, HSUS.

I know.. like the way PETA uses tacticts that border on terrorism, to try to frighten people into doing what they want.

    Re: Inhumane Society..

Yay lets release all our BPs into Africa so they can be tick infested, hunted, and go hungry! Sounds like fun!

    Re: Inhumane Society..

    Thanks for that clarification Marla!

Actually we do support the animal shelter in the county next to ours which is very animal AND human friendly.

The one in our county is just, how do I say this, just plain wierd. If you go in to adopt a dog, they won't let you handle it, stating it "upsets" the dogs to be removed from the cage and then returned to it. Their volunteers just seem to sit in the dog's enclosure rather than doing any real socializing of these poor dogs but then if you can't take a dog out of it's cage, how can you really socialize it and avoid cage mania.

However, they want to charge you almost $150.00 for a stray that is not spayed/neutered unless it came in that way but is micro-chipped. To me I think the issue of unwanted puppies is more important than a chip but perhaps that's just me.

As far as feral cats, they won't do a thing. We have a beautiful feral female that lives in the forest. It's up to me to trap her I guess as they refuse but will quite nicely rent me a trap (how kind of them to care so much....arrgh). Each year she produces more kittens to be wild too. Sad, because they are a kill shelter so I know if I trap her, she will have a very "short" visit at the local animal shelter. For now I just try to keep an eye on her and feed her when I can. She's in lovely shape so I don't know if trapping her just to have her euthanized is what I should do, but I hate to see her running wild and breeding like that.

    Sorry for the rant.

    Re: Inhumane Society..

Joanna, I am sure that is very frustrating, not being able to get help for that poor mama cat. We have some groups of individuals around here who have organized to trap, spay, and re-release feral cats so that they don't have to be killed but don't produce more unwanted animals, and some of the local vets give them discounts on spaying and local pet stores allow them to collect donations. Maybe you could look into or suggest starting a group like that in your area?

And I'm glad the clarification was useful. I hate the fact that the HSUS can use that name because it's so misleading and I'm sure many of their donations come from regular citizens who think they're donating to the AHA or similar organization.
