ok fellas, lets say im the new guy...

now that i got that out of the way, i have a few questions, but first a little about me... i am you can say new to BPs, well any snake really, about 6 years ago i tried and failed at the hobby, well now i am trying to educate myself before i make the leap, which will be next weekend when i pick up.

a little about what i know of my prospective gain, i was told he was 1 year and a half, eats well although he could only give me size comparison of what he eats by a show of hand. now my question here is should i just forget everything he tells me and make my own assumptions? if that is the case then should i start with small fuzzy mice and feed every other day or so until i figure out what is the best size for him to eat? or would it be better to feed him small amounts or one big meal?

i am sure i will have lots of questions, just getting my feet wet here

    thanks

    mike

There is also a lot of good info if you read the sticky posts in husbandry and general care threads of this site. You should read the bag python care sheets to get a general idea of what you are doing (Google ball python care sheet)

Fuzzy mice are too small even for hatchling BPs. They start on fuzzy rats and move up pretty quickly. We would need to know his size/weight to make a feeding recommendation; age doesn't mean anything. I got a year-old BP who weighed 100g, and an online friend of mine had a BP who hit 900g before he was a year old .

Re: ok fellas, lets say im the new guy...

Feed a rodent the same size or tiny bit bigger than the thickset part of the snake, even better would be to get a gram scale and weigh the snake and then weigh the rodents and feed 10%-15% of body weight. Also make sure you feed what the previous owner was offering, meaning if he was feeding live then feed live and if he was feeding frozen/thawed then feed frozen thawed. If feeding live make sure you never leave until the rodent has been killed, if feeding f/t make sure rodent is thawed completely. Feeding f/t is much more convenient but if the snake is on live and you want to switch to f/t make sure the snake eats for you like 5 times before you try switching.

Hopefully your back on soon. Ask lots of questions and read this care sheet and have your cage and everything setup and ready to go. Don't forgot a thermostat or something to regulate the heating device. Welcome to the forum and again read the care sheet in the link below.
