Few RHP questions
Hi I received the advice to use a RHP in my BP's new animal plastics enclosure that just came in a few days ago and I have some questions before I move him into the tank. First where is a good placement for the probe? I know most likely I will have to drill a hole to fit it but I would like to know where to place it. Secondly what temperature would be ideal as it takes up about 2/3 the space I plan on using (pictures will be included). Finally how the heck do I connect the electrical plug to the cord (it's a pro heat radiant panel) I feel like an absolute idiot and it's driving me mad because it came with no instructions.

Re: Few RHP questions
I just got my T-8 a little over a month ago and installed my RHP from Reptile Basics so I know how you feel lol. I also felt like an idiot when it came to the RHP but it seems like its the same exact thing. For me, there was one wire a little higher than the other one. (I mean maybe a cm higher) This wiring I believe also had a darker coloring. Google or a more experienced person will help a bit better than I. I honestly put the wiring through, put the clamp down and plugged it in to see if it worked and it did, lucky guess for me. As far as the probes concerned, I originally had it installed on the floor using glue on the wire and not touching the probe itself. I got a herpstat 2 off of craigslist for a good price so again I got lucky. However, after about a week and blaming the herpstat for my temp problems, I saw a thread on here that had a rep from spyder robotics stating the probe needs to be within 6 inches of your heat source. So what I did is reglued the wiring to the RHP itself and now the probe hangs probably a 1/2 inch away from the lens. After playing with the temps I have the probe set to about 98 degrees which gives me an 88-90 degree hotspot on the floor. I had to set my RHP a little in front of my BPS hide due to getting LED recessed lighting installed from AP but it still penetrates through.

Re: Few RHP questions
I put my probes on the ground under the rhp and set to 90. Some people say not to do this in case the snake poops on it or something but I've never had a problem. Also an rhp that covers 2/3 of an enclosure is to big IMO, I'm assuming your using a divider, it would be good for the full cage but not for half. You will have trouble keeping your cool side between 78-82 while keeping hot spot around 90. If your using the divider and told pro products that you are then I could be wrong but if you didn't tell pro products that you may have a problem. If you are using a divider and didnt tell pro products you will have to contact them again and tell them your using half the cage and get a new rhp. I bought my pro products rhp used and the person I bought them from told me it didn't matter which way and mine works fine, I could of just been lucky though.

Re: Few RHP questions
My plug is like this, With the rhp attached to the cage pull the cord straight so there is no twists and then the plug prongs face up.

A few people suggested getting a RHP spanning the entire cage and setting it to 84 and this was what pro heat sent me so I was planning on sticking with that and wasn't sure if 2/3 is enough to do that but seems to be my only option they suggested if he was having issues with heat just place a tile under the cool hide. He's only 174 g so small and I know I can't use the entire cage because that will stress him a lot (it's an animal plastics t8). I did inform them of the divider.

You dont need a RHP that big. it depends on the size of your enclosure, and the temp of the room at its coldest. I have a 36x18x18 tank and a room that never got below 75ish, a 40watt was plenty and it takes less than half of the space.
Personally, i have my probe on the opposite end of the tank. My RPH controls my ambient temp and if the probe was on the same side as the panel, it would turn itself off before the entire tank was the proper temp. Since my tank is completely closed at the top and heat doesnt escape, if i wanted to heat my hot spot with the RHP, the entire tank would be 90 degrees, which is no good.

Re: Few RHP questions
We put our probes through a hole in the back wall so that they're a few inches below the RHP, which usually puts them about halfway between the RHP and the floor or basking shelf. The probe just sticks out in space, a piece of duct tape on the cable on the back of the cage keeps it from getting pulled in or out.
Once things are up and running, then we check the temps at various points around the cage, and tweak the thermostat settings as necessary. Let run, check, adjust if necessary, repeat until comfortable with everything.

Thanks so much for the help. Since the RHP is too large would it be feasible to use flexiwatt for the warm side and then use the RHP as a method of keeping ambient air temps?

Rhp heat objects more than the air so what you can do is set the temp of the rhp so it is 80-82 on ground under it, make sure the hide is also within 78-82 , then use flex watt on the other 1/3 with no rhp and set it so it will be no more than 94 under the substrate. You will need a thermostat for each heating device.
