Question Can Internal or External Parasites from BP Transmit to Human?

    Hello Everyone,

I just made an Health Examinations appointment for my new snake tmr.

I know salmonella from a snake can transmit to human but not RI.

But what if a snake has internal and external parasites such as hookworms, roundworms, mites, and ticks?
Can one be infected by just handling an infected snake?

Depends on the pathogen. As you noted, salmonella can be picked up by both humans and reptiles. Same goes for worms and ticks, though snake mites don't typically feed on mammals.

The bacteria and virii that cause most RI's also usually don't cross the reptile/mammal barrier. Same goes for crypto; the particular strain that affects reptiles is different than the one that affects people.

As always wash your hands after handling your snakes. Hand sanitizer is also your friend.

Yea, its been shown via VPI's study of the snake mite that they can for a short while live on a warm blooded host so take that for what its worth

Ticks - yes its a tick

I've seen people have snakes with tapeworms (usually wild-caught) but I'm not sure about the others. I would think that you could contract the parasite via contact with infect fecal matter or bedding.

Could feeding frozen rat minimize the risk of infection?

That depends on how cold they were frozen.. Lets be honest though, if you're buying your feeders from a reputable source or breeding your own then the risk is nonexistent. It's when your feeders are from somewhere you can't be sure that they offer high quality rodent feed/mix or you've had animals come in from WC or CH sources that then don't get QT'ed and wormed before they are put in the general collection that the devil pops up.

As long as they ice-cream and rats don't come in contact with each other and as always wash your hands after you handle any frozen rodent or food item i.e chicken, beef, fish
