    Feeding Question

Hi guys I have a newbie question I got my ball python 2 weeks ago and I've fed her once (frozen thawed) a week ago. Now she has been in her hide for 2 days and today is feeding day do I take her out and feed her or wait for her to come out and feed her ?

    Re: Feeding Question

Most of the time mine come out to the smell of food. What I do is after the rodent is thawed I take it into my snakes room and use a hair dryer and heat the head up while blowing it toward the vent/screen in the cage. If she don't come out once you have heated the head up for a minute or so take it with tongs and dance it in front of her hide. Sometime they will strike it right from hide also.

    Re: Feeding Question

Not true. Most people on here will tell you is unnecessary to move a snake to a new enclosure. It can cause stress. A bp should eat and then not be touched for 2 days. You don't want a regurge. Plus since she's in feeding mode when you go to get her out of the other feeding bin you could get bit. There is absolutely nothing wrong with feeding in her enclosure. Like I said Many many others in here as well as I feed and recommend to feed in enclosure for the reasons above.

    Re: Feeding Question

Ok like you said i was trying to avoid the bitting part so I was going to feed her in a separate cage so she won't associate her enclosure with feeding, I will wait for her couple of hours if she will not come out i will have to feed her in her enclosure

Also if your new to ball pythons make sure to read the care sheet on here if you haven't already. Also the people are great on here so just post any questions you have and they usually get answered pretty quick! Here is a link.

I've heard that associate feeding with cage. Same thing can happen with the different enclosure the only difference is that you just fed her in it so she is in feeding mode already. When if you feed her in her actual cage your leaving her alone for 2 days and she is then out of feeding mode and the smell of rodent has passed and there's no chance there is rodent smell on your hand unless you handle them everyday. You also wouldn't want her to start thinking every time she gets pulled from her cage she is going to be fed. There is pros and cons to both but the pros outweigh the cons when feeding in cage and the cons outweigh the pros when feeding in separate cage.

I'm not trying to tell you what to do I'm just trying to explain that if you really think about it the only difference is moving to a new enclosure your causing stress and unnecessary movement in a snake that is in feeding mode. Also that separate feeding enclosure will be recognized as only feeding bc that's all it will be for and the one she actually lives in she does more then feed, she sleeps, slithers, sheds, goes to the bathroom, etc so it won't be just an association of feeding. Plus you won't be sticking your hand your back into the cage after eating. After she strikes and puts it down you just wait at least 48hrs before you do anything else. Sorry if I came off as telling you what to do, it just seemed like you only heard from the side of feeding in different cage and not anything from the side of feeding in the same cage and when you have both sides together you get feeding in enclosure is safer for you and her IMO.

Anyways hope tonights feeding goes well! Post some pics of her when you get the chance! Also welcome to bp.net!!!!!!
