Hey guys, I'm really torn about the T8. I might just be overthinking it.

I want one for my jungle carpet python. He's 2 years old and a bit over 4 feet, and he's in an exo terra the size of a 40 gallon breeder (36x18x18 I believe?). A T8 would give him more room, but less height. Is that okay for him? Is it better to go up to the T10 for him, or is the T8 just fine?

It all depends on what behaviors you want to see out of your snake. The size is fine, but personally I love carpet pythons for their active, semi arboreal qualities.

Without question your carpet will use the ceiling space, however I would not sacrifice width and depth for it.

IMO, and in the opinion of a lot of keepers, a nice sized enclosure for a carpet is 4 x 2 x 2.

Depending on your situation, and the size of your collection, a display cage may not be right for you.

However if you want to focus on your carpet as a wonderful display snake by all means add some ceiling space.

I bought a realistic 3D high quality rock background, added my own perches and decked out the enclosure.




The snake uses every inch of it. Day time hours are usually on the ground. As soon as the sun sets here, she is out all night into the morning on most days.



I would love to see somebody else enjoy their carpet like many of us "display cage" folks so I'm recommending some ceiling space.

Don't discount AP as I think they have good options as well. But personally I'd look at the T-10, 11 or 12.

The T-8 to me is short. That's just my opinion. Pop for a little extra space now and you'll be happier down the road.

But hey, some people keep carpets in racks too. Not my bag, but it is doable.

I'm kinda in the same boat. I have BPs in a rack, and I had my carpet in an exoterra. I'd just rather a PVC cage for him. He's about 2 years old and as of right now, he perches. I'm just told as they age, they get less arboreal and will no longer really make use of the space I provide for them. That's why I'm so torn haha. I want him to be happy and have the room he needs for sure.

I've not heard that they don't perch when adult and have not experienced it with my coastal. If you read THE COMPLETE CARPET PYTHON by Nick Mutton and Justin Julander, you see the folks in the field regularly find full grown coastal carpets several meters up into the canopy.

Jungles are one of the more arboreal species, and diamonds are said to be the least arboreal of the carpet group. However they are all considered highly arboreal.

My female is over 6 feet long and is still growing. Her mother is near 10 feet long and the photos I've seen of Mom show her perched.

I think that "not perching" observation may be a product of perch size and placement. I'm speculating, but if the snake gets larger, the perches need to be larger. A larger, heavier snake will need some more support and space to rest comfortably. If they have tiny perches, placed poorly they may find the floor more comfy.

Another AP option is the shelf. It may not have the decorative quality of perches, but it adds a second level with plenty of support. You could look into that.

I have two of my young carpets (Jungle and Bredl) in a divided T8 and another (coastal) yearling in a 40g tank. All of them like to perch in the highest areas of their enclosure. As they grow I want to give them as much vertical space as I can. I agree with Gio. I think a 4x2x2 is ideal but I'm considering a 4x2x3 also.

I agree that the perch should be enlarged at some point. In fact, I just went to larger perch yesterday because I noticed my 1.5 yr old jungle was really drooping excessively on her previous perch. That makes sense since she almost doubled her size in the past 6 months.

I too am considering a 4x2x3 like Ziggy.

How hard would it be to build my own? I also love looking up and seeing my jungle out and about, I literally smile every time I see him. He was my first, so hes my baby. Lol. I want to give him the best, so if I give him the space and he'll use it, then that's what I want to do.

Edit: I should mention that, while I am an artist and illustrator, I'm not very "handy". It would have to be pretty darn simple.

I'm waiting for our big AP order that includes a 4 X 2 X 3 for my JCP, and a 4 X 2 X 2 for my Bredli, both with shelves, and we'll be adding something (probably inexpensive climbing holds) to the walls for them to climb on. I also plan on giving them artificial vines and/or rod perches.

Bruce, my JCP, spends most of his time off the floor. Ying, the Bredli, spends a a quarter to a third of her time on the floor, I'd guess.
