    Big cheap hides

I just realised I should share my find.. I went to the hardware store (can't remember if it was menards or home depot.. doesn't matter) and I saw the bases for seedling starters (not sure the actual term here..) but they're the thing that catches the water drained from the seedlings. They are big, rectangular black plastic things. They seem a bit flimsy, but they've held up well with my Hogg island boa. They were less than a dollar each! I actually had to cut them down quite a bit for my 5 1/2' boa, so if you have a larger snake, check them out!

I found a pic of one here:

Sounds like a good idea, my last hide creation/find was two of the larger dog water bowls from petco. After using the soldering iron to cut entrances and flipping them over, I had two new hides for my Boa.

I love the dog dishes. Mine uses one as a water dish/hide. Occasionally you can find the kind that have handles that can act as doors and a big lip that goes all the way to the ground that can be used with no alterations as a perfect hide. Snug, touches all their sides and doubles as a water dish. I'm looking everywhere to find a bigger version of the one I have, it's just been perfect.

Oh.. you mean you put the water in the top, and the snake hides underneath it? Cool.. anyone have a pic of that kind of dish so I can keep my eye out for them? Would they be big enough for a 5 1/2' boa?

Maybe, if you found the largest one they make (like those huge water bowls for like mastives and stuff). They are those no spill water bowls, and the are like a square but where the water is is sunken down, so they can go into it and it touches all their sides and works as a cool hide.

Yeah I really should look into those.. my poor boa is so crowded with her two hides and her water dish in the 30 gal tank. I'd be concerned about the dish fitting inside the tank though.

    Re: Big cheap hides

I got an oil pan from Auto Zone (with our wonderful truck, we go to that store a few times a month!) It makes a perfect water bowl for Goblin; I think they all should have water bowls they can soak in if they feel like it; even the big guys. Flip one over and cut a door, and it's an instant hide for a couple of bucks.
