Hi all. I recently bought a stack of 4 vivariums for my two ball pythons (soon to get more). The vivariums are very well built and are handmade by the previous owner. He used slate slabs as the floor/roof of each vivarium, this is good as it traps humidity and looks good, and also allows heat to rise through the stack of vivs.
In the other hand, I am concerned that I am not heating them in a good enough fashion. I use heat mats in the hot end directly under the substrate (bark) with a thermostat (habistat pulse) and I worry that it might burn the snake.
I bought the vivarium ready with thermostats and a few heat mats. It also came with ceramic heat bulbs that the previous owner used on the lower floors. Out of curiosity I turned one on to see the effect on the cage on top of it, as suspected, the slate roof/floor got very very hot.
My question to you guys is what's a better way to heat my snakes up without fear of burning or worse?
Ps my temps are good at the moment so I don't need to take rapid action.
Thanks
