garter snakes

Since this is basically just a ball python forum, I wanted to ask you guys, what do you guys think about colubrids? Specifically garter snakes. Me personally, I love garter snakes. They're actually what made me want to start breeding snakes in the first place. When I was living in California I caught a large female coast garter snake, a the time I didnt know it was a female nor did i know she was pregnant. Well, as you can guess, I woke up one morning to check on her to find six tiny babies slithering around the enclosure with her. I just wish the people I lived with didnt make me let them all go.

I like garters, they're very nice display snakes, and quite interactive. Unfortunately, I can't see myself owning too many of them since they're not easy to handle due to their tiny size. But, there's so much variety I'll probably still own quite a few. I've got two right now, but I'm planning on getting one or two more checkereds and a snow Plains at least.

I really wanted to breed them but after doin some research I dont I'm about that. Lol. I mean depending on their size they can have well over forty babies and thats way to many.

They can definitely have a little batch. The mother to my eastern garter, Demigod, had five or six babies I think, but she appeared to be rather old and died after her owner had her for about 2 years. She was an injured garter caught from the wild who gave birth in captivity. A couple of her offspring failed to thrive, and I think there's just 3 babies left, and Demigod is quite small, too. Not sure if it's from his mom's age, his genetics, or his diet growing up, but he's nearly have the size of my checkerd that's roughly the same age, maybe a couple months younger.

Garters are the classic beginners snake and they have several different morphs that are really sought after. I have been breeding garters for years and I doubt if I will ever stop. Some of the sub species and varying species do grow to a large size, especially the females.

Garters are what got me loving snakes, would go catch them in the yard when I was five or six. Brought one on the Bus I think in second grade or so....it didn't end well

Just recently started producing this morph. Granite pastel checkered garter. This individual is a young hatchling male. He is one of my holdback males.
