Questions about the whole breeding for specific morphs and just general idea bouncing
I just recently got a female orange ghost x coral glow het orange ghost combo and was wondering what I should breed her to in order to get awesome colors and or patterns?
I'm still trying to understand the whole genetics game so any help would be great. I was originally thinking of buying a male clown but now thinking of maybe breeding for brighter coral glow ghosts.. but piebalds seem cool as well. Just wanted to bounce some ideas around with others who would get my excitement about it.
I'll try and get some pictures up. She's a super pretty snake.. very pastel with a purple-ish base behind her yellow and orange and she's getting black speckles too! The guy I bought her from had her listed as a coral glow but then said she was also a visual ghost when I picked her up and I agree that she does have some ghost markings. I have pics of the parents as well if anyone cares lol
Thanks guys. Any ideas or tips are very welcome

Oh and so breeding 'makers' just sounds cool to me. I don't understand it fully.. but I want to.
So in order to do that I would have to breed my gal to a visual coral glow male?
Also if the dude had ghost as well that would increase the likelihood that the kiddos would have the pattern plus the color?

well, let's assume you really have a CG/OG female. I would breed her to a Fire/OG male when the time comes.

and if you're a really patient person who doesn't mind waiting a few generations for a double recessive, I'd go Fire/Clown

Personally when I think of bright .. ghost is the last thing that comes to mind ... As Dennis said, fire is a color enhancer ... Vanilla also tends to brighten things up
Being a visual ghost is something that usually is at the top of the description when describing a snake that is actually that ...... I myself am curious as to how you decide if a coral glow snake is indeed a visual ghost .... ghost is a pigment mutation and has nothing to do with the pattern of a snake .... These are just my opinions and questions and I am by far no expert

All those recessives can be long term projects.

If you are up to a long term project I would put her to a pumpkin pied or pastel pied. If you are fortunate enough to produce both genders of coral glow double het for ghost and pied, that also carries either the Pastel or Yellowbelly gene (depending on which you use), then you breed them together and have a shot at a great clutch with quite a few different combos of pied. I guess if you use YB then perhaps you would only want to have one of them carry the YB gene so you don't wash the rest out by producing an Ivory.

Ok.... where to start. there are a bunch of things that you need to figure out with how bp genetics work. Reading your post I can see a few things you need to understand.
The biggest thing when breeding BP is knowing what kind of gene is what.
There are 3 basic types of genes and each work differently.
1. Dominant-
Dominant genes are passed to offspring with a 50% chance.
Meaning breed a dominant gene to a normal and statistically get 50% babies with that dominant gene, and 50% without
2. Codominant-
Co dominants are passed in the same way as dominants. 50% chance.
The difference is if BOTH parents have that gene, and both parents pass that 50% chance gene to their baby, you will get a Super form of that morph.
The odds of this happening are 25% per egg.
Now supers usually have a different look than their regular gene counterparts and have the added bonus of always passing that Codominant gene. Basically it's 50% chance, twice. Since it has 2 copies of the gene.
Confused yet?
3. Recessive - basically... there are genes that a snake can carry that won't change its appearance unless it carries 2 of them (1 from mom, 1 from dad). A normal looking snake carrying a hidden gene in this manner is called a heterozygous or HET.
When you see a Het. Albino ball python, it means it's normal looking but carries the albino gene hidden in it.
In order to produce a visual recessive gene snake, you would have to breed 2 snakes with the gene to get a chance.
Breeding 2 visuals will give you 100% odds of visual offspring.
A visual and a het, 50%.
2 hets., 25%.
A het and a normal gives you no chance of visuals, only a chance of hets.
Now, there's a lot more for the more experienced and researched breeders but I don't want to drown you in info. Basically, learn which of the 3 types of genes your snakes fall under and put the puzzle together. Without knowing if a orange ghost is recessive or dominant means you won't be able to predict what you will produce (it's recessive by the way).
A lot of people use world of ball pythons or the app for it (wob). There you can see what kind of morphs you are working with!
Any more questions feel free to pm me!
