Substrate Question
Hey guys, so I have been using construction/paint type brown paper as substrate for about a year new, and its easy to clean, cheap, and everything, but my big boy has gotten to the point where when I replace the paper, he immediately just crushes it all into a corner, and its like there isn't a substrate there at all. Is there a better thing I can use where this doesn't happen? Or can I just stop using a substrate at all?

Some of my larger snakes "redecorate" similarly. Try weighing down the corners of the paper with things like a heavy water bowl, a hide (I make them out of restaurant bus tubs for my big snakes), large flat rocks, etc.

Hey, if you are not into cypress or coco husk, this might be for you.
JB is no longer into snakes, but he used to own, breed and sell beautiful Guyana BCCs.
He used this for substrate and this is a detailed video.

I use American Excelsior Aspen. It is fine shredded and packs down well. Although my big BCI girl still shoves it around, my little BCI girl loves to bury in it and stretch out wit just her head poking up lol. Plus the aspen soaks up piss well, easy to spot turds and easy to spot clean.

Re: Substrate Question
I use an indoor / outdoor carpet from Home Depot for about $1.98 a linear foot (which is about 6 sq ft). I buy enough to change it five or six times and cut it to fit. It's cheap, aesthetically pleasing, comes in different colors, holds heat fairly well, and is super fast to change when dirty. The only downside is that it probably isn't the most environmentally friendly option.

Do you clean/disinfect/reuse it when it gets soiled?

How many layers are you using? I use unprinted newsprint for the small boas, fold the edges up around all sides and then more in the center. If they get under, they usually get under the middle layers and not under the outside edge layers. I use a lot though, probably 15-20 layers or so. For my juvis and adults, I use singleface corrugated. Usually one layer but sometimes the boas will get under instead of using their hides. For the ones that do it often, I try to put 2 layers in but sometimes it just happens. And then of course, they poop under there, the brats. haha
