Is my uth working right help
I am getting a new girl on thursday, my tank is set up, but because she is so small i am starting her off in a 20 gal. tank. I have a zoomed uth with a thermostat. my problem is i can't get the hot side above 80 degrees. I am using only 3/4 - 1 inch of cypress mulch. here are the temps i get. The temp under the hide onthe cypress is 80. the temps on the glass under aspin is 95. the temp on bottom of tank right on bottom on mat is 109. the thermostat is set at 105. the tank is on an open stand that fits the tank. Ambient tempsare 70, but i am getting a foam wall for the 3 side, to help with the ambient. Humidity is 40-45%. Is there a problem with the uth or are these temps normal. The uth is for a 10-20 gal tank size. Temp probe is on glass inside tank, under cypress. Can anyone help, is the uth bad or the thermostat.e.

I'm having the same exact issues. What brand did you get?

Hmm. Not sure, as I have a different brand. But, it might not be brand related. Weird. If I found out anything, I'll let you know if it hasn't already been said.

My husband thought the problem might be that the tank is on an open stand so he put a piece of cardboard under the frame of the stand, and the temp on the cypress rose to 84. if this solves the problem i will lay a piece of wood on the stand and put the tank on the wood. The tank has 4 feet so the uth will not touch the wood. my other tanks sit on tables.

You measure your temperature UNDER the substrate as your snake can and will burrow or more the substrate as needed.
Neither the thermostat or mat are bad.
Where is your probe for the thermostat? It does NOT belong inside the enclosure.

if your trying to raise ambients a uth does nothing for you but provide a hotspot... If temps need to be raised anywhere else in the tank your gonna have to use a heat light/che or raise the temps of the room... If your talking about your hotspot ignore what i said

Re: Is my uth working right help
My probe is on the glass inside the tank it is attached to the glass by a little suction cup. I know the ambient can't be helped by the uth, so i am getting the next size up in heat bulb just to raise it a bit, i use a 40 watt now but will go to the next size about 60 watt. Since the tank is a 20 gal long, i put a 4 inch piece of foil on each end so i can keep some of the heat in the tank. It helped a little but i think the bigger bulb is needed. i also purchased a rock foam background as insulation i think that will help.

Needs to be outside the enclosure.

Re: Is my uth working right help
Try a "versa top" glass cover for your 20 gallon enclosure. They can be purchased at Petland, Petsmart and Petco. It will help with your ambient temperature and the humidity percentage.
Stay in peace and not pieces.
