NJ Permits

We are beginning to breed our ball pythons, and are planning on selling the hatchlings when they come. We are trying to figure out what type of permit we need to do this. Is there anyone in NJ that is currently breeding and selling their snakes? If so do you have a permit, and what kind is it?

Permits for the keeping and breeding of reptiles would be governed by your local town, or city. If you call your town clerk, they will tell you if there are any restrictions in your town or city. All states now have some restrictions on the types of snakes you can keep, but bp's are not on these yet. If you live in a privite home you own, its up to you, but if you live in a condo, townhouse, or apartment complex, you might have to check with the super, or the association that governs the rules in the complex. if you own your own your house, just make sure that what you are keeping is not on the state or town restricted list. Remember every town can incorporate its own rules, so an animal allowed in your town may be allowed, but in the next town over be prohibited. So to be sure call your local town hall.

I left NJ in 2007 but at that time and for many years NJ did have a permit system. I would check the NJ Fish and Wildlife website. It was pretty simple, a hobbyist permit was $10. They wanted an update every time you bought and sold an animal but I would just send in a annual update when I renewed my permit. At a certain point I was asked to get a Dealer permit which was $100 but I had approx. 50 - 75 snakes at the time. I moved before I started selling so I called and they let me keep the hobbyist permit.

I'm in New York, the Bronx. I applied for a "certificate of authority" with New York States office of licensing with a code for selling live harmless reptiles and pet related supplies. But that is New York State. The cost was 50.00

I also live in NY, but not within NYC. On Long Island we can have as many snakes as we want as long as they are not on the states prohibited list. If you breed on a small scale as a hobby there are no permits needed. I also own my own home so there are no neighborhood associations that needed to be consulted. My town is also a farm first town so i can keep certain types of small livestock. Now if you drive 5 miles west, they voted out all the farm first laws, and you need town permits for many animals, including some breeds of dogs. That is why i say your town or city clerks office will give you the most accurate permit info. for your city or town. My only opinion is the government is just getting too big for its britches.+
