    Question Constantly active lately...

(I am a maker of new threads recently...)

Cake has been too active lately and I rarely/never see him in his hide. He's clambering over his branches and trying to climb around the upper edge of his tub for 95% of the time when I see him, for the past two weeks already. I'm at work during the day, so I can't observe him then. But from 7pm~2am every night, he's constantly moving. I was waiting to see if he would calm down magically, but he has not.

He's not hungry (he hides for 1~2 days after a meal but then comes out to be constantly active again), not cold (his heated area is at 88~90 as usual), didn't poo or pee, well-hydrated, no stuck sheds. I even tried switching out his paper towels for aspen again to see if it would change anything, but it didn't. And since he doesn't want to stay in his hide/the hot spot, he's been constantly cold too.

I didn't manage to find any info on being constantly active, unless the BP is hungry/some incorrect husbandry... which in this case, it is not...

    Any ideas?

I was joking with my friend that "Cake is trying to become a real boy".

    Bonus Cake photo...

Not sure here. Snickers is the total opposite conditions are great enclosure is clean whenever I take him out he's nice and warm because he stays in his warm hide all day and night long. I have seen him come out once in the last month. In the evening time because he was hungry I'm sure of it. Funny situation. Maybe he's just curious. What size is his enclosure?

We're having a similar thing with my daughters hatchling mojave. Had her about three weeks now. She was in her hides all the time and if you looked in on her and she had her head out she would act scared and pull her head back in. She refused first offering of f/t but has just slammed her last two. The last 3 or 4 days though she is out almost all the time. Not really roaming her tank but perched on top of her cool hide or laying on or on top of her stump warm hide. She was perched on top of her stump Saturday when I fed her and she literally lunged off the stump to strike the hopper and coiled it before landing on tank floor. We have her in a 10 gallon, 3 sides covered with jungle background, foil tape over screened top, red light with rheostat for ambient temps and a UTH on thermostat under stump hide. Temps all good checked with temp gun. She handles great, has only hissed once but never struck. You pick her up she doesn't ball and acts like she isn't scared what so ever.

i have 2 BP's in separate 18 gallon tanks including my normal girl Elphaba. she's usually active after dusk, like climbs her little tree, burrows into substrate, hang on a branch, chills in the open, etc.

here's a pix of Elphie burrowing from her middle hid and out the back into a mound of substrate.

anyway i think activity is ok, it's apart of their personality. but when they try to escape, it's an issue. for example, has Cake been rubbing his face/chin on his tub? look for rawness if that's what he's doing. there's been threads on here the past few weeks about active snakes trying to get out of their tubs and rubbing some scales off or partially so.

He is trying to get out, but fortunately hasn't rubbed his nose or scales off (yet). Someone else suggested that the dropping ambient temps due to the season might be a reason, so he's seeking warmer ambient temps? Which is a possibility.

It was actually the first thing I thought of a couple weeks back, but reptilebasics is out of stock in their 11x23" Ultratherm pads for the past two weeks. They're still out of stock, and even they have no idea when they will get their next shipment. I'm planning to just buy three of the 11x23" UTH's and have them be what all three of my guys will use as adults.

Well, I wouldn't think it was weird if he's always been like this. But he's always been a blob in his hide, same setup and everything, and just suddenly became very active in the past couple weeks- and the behavior apparently isn't going away, which leads me to question why.

How are you heating the enclosure? What's your cold side temps and what are your ambient temps?

Also, how old is your BP? With mine were younger, they were a lot more active than now.

Ultratherm UTH... of course on a thermostat. Measuring temps with temp gun and Acurite in the enclosure on the cold side. Ambient is around 73~76, depending on the time of day. Temp inside the hide itself is around 80~84. Surface temp in the hide is around 88~91.

He's almost 7 months old now actually. He was never very active before these past couple weeks, and it's only just gotten colder in the past couple weeks... so now I'm really thinking it might be the dropping ambient temps. But then it makes me wonder why he is avoiding his hide when he should be trying to stay warm.

Your ambient temps might be low which could be the reason why he's more active because he's searching for a warmer place. Don't forget that room temperature drops quite a bit at night.

Are you keeping him in a glass tank? If so, have you though of adding a heat lamp?

yep, try raising your room temp. try placing his tub in a dark, enclosed place? maybe he's trying to escape a smell? maybe he wants to use the bathroom, but wants to relieve himself outside of his tub?

i'm just throwing spaghetti at the wall and seeing what sticks.
