My first feeding... SUCCESS!!!

I've been a BP owner since Sunday... yep, 4 days. I'm nearly a veteran... lol... just kidding, and that was meant in most sarcastic way possible. Hell, I'm not even a beginner yet. I was told my new month and a half old female had only been given live fuzzy and hopper mice but she was a good eater and was fed midweek. I stopped and got some frozen fuzzyies yesterday at a local shop and went home, thawed and warmed one using a ziploc baggie and warm water, then some hotter water. I presented to her in front of her hide where she was hanging out. I dropped it once, but within 10 seconds of opening the cage, she was on it. Hopefully this is a sign that she'll be easily converted to frozen/thawed. I did realize that I think I need a bigger mouse. I'll definately get her a hopper size for the next couple of weeks. She did take about 10 or 15 minutes to eat the mouse though... she had the mouses neck in her mouth and it took her a little while to figure out how to get it turned around. I wanted to help her, but figured it better that she just figure it out for herself, which she did.

I know I'm happy (and a little relieved)... and I'm sure she was happy. Yay!!!

Thank you. I know it doesn't seem like much... and I'm sure to most of you who have been doing this for a while, it's dumb... but this is my first snake and I guess I've read way too much about all the trouble you can have converting from live to frozen and how difficult some snakes can be. I'm just happy it went as smoothly as it did... this time anyways. lol

She will be fine when you get her on a regular feeding regime. It will be better when you can switch her to rats, as they (I believe) have more nutritional value. But for now, getting her on a stable feeding regime is probably your top priority.

I have only been a snake keeper as of the 15th of December, 2014, so I'm not all that experienced. I was just as excited as you when I got my royal to eat.

Congrats on the successful first feed. Only 779 more to go . It's always great when a new snake eats for the first time or when any of my snakes eat for that matter. It never gets old to me.

Congrats!! Cross your fingers that she's just an easy eater and it wasn't a fluke.

When I got Cake, he slammed an F/T mouse his first week. And then gradually began refusing to eat them the following weeks. It ended up taking me hours to get him to eat, and it was painstaking, so I switched to live. He stayed on live for some 4 months, before I tried converting him again. And with some more tricks up my sleeve on how to heat/scent the F/T mouse, he converted instantly. It's weird how things work, but I believe the majority of BP's can switch to F/T, if you know all the tricks.

Feeding babies is the best. Both my new hatchlings are taking ft no problem. They can be so easy to get to eat ft. Adults on the other hand..

i know the feeling, i'd had my very first ball python a whole 4 days before i tried feeding her frozen (and i've still had her for less then 2 weeks, nice to see i'm not the only newbie), and she caught on really quickly, despite apparently having been fed live. she was a little bit scared of me trying to wiggle it, and had to bump into it before she chomped, but i was glad she sorted it out so fast. it's a good feeling, i was super worried that she wouldn't eat!
