    Expiration of Frozen Rodents

Out of curiosity, I was reading a few caresheets for Barn Owls when I read the following:

"Food items that have been frozen for more than 3 months, as the:cens0r:levels of vitamin E become depleted."

If this is the case, does that mean my F/T rats and mice should not be used if they have been frozen for more than three months? Do BPs need vitamin E to the same degree as a barn owl, for example?

    Re: Expiration of Frozen Rodents

Rodents don't last long around here, but I have never kept track of the longest time I've kept feeders in the freezer.

It would be interesting to see what others have to say on the matter.

The longest I havever had feeders in the freezer is about 4 months. No ill effects that I noticed, still looked good and my snakes took them consistently. I am also interested to see what others say. I am not sure about the vitamin e statistic.

I've had feeders for 6-8 months and my snakes were still eating them and growing with no problems.

    Re: Expiration of Frozen Rodents

My dogs are fed a prey model raw diet, so I know from my raw feeding experience and research that as long as the meat (or in this case, rodents) have been continuously frozen, even if it is fresher burnt, it doesn't change the nutritional value of the food.

I know people who feed freezer burnt meat that is a few years old to their cats and dogs with no I'll effect. I have read a few articles about this topic in my raw feeding group. I'm on my phone now, but when I get home I will see if I can find them.
