    Activity level before eating?

    Hi all,

So Today I fed my new friend Alex for the second time. I was pleased he ate, though he had a lot of trouble situating the hopper to eat properly (kept trying to eat it on it's side).

I noticed today he was extremely active all day, roaming around ect. I am doing a 6 day feeding schedule. He is still quite young.

I noticed the same thing last feeding, being very active the day of feeding.

I'm not concerned. More curious if you all's snakes do this as well. I included a photo for size reference. And I think he's pretty cute.

He is never active during the day otherwise. Only at night.

Mine don't do it, but I've heard that some will remain in "hunt mode" for a little while after feeding.

Thanks for the reply. He goes straight back to his warm hide after I feed him and disappears completely for 2 days after feeding.

Mine actually is less active when he nears feed day so far. I know he's ready when he sits there with just his head poking out of his hide like a little stalker waiting for a delicious rat to walk by. If I even put my hand in the cage at that point he comes charging out coiled and ready to strike (so I better have some food to drop off).

He has the same routine when he finishes eating too. Comes out for a quick sip of water and then doesn't come out of his warm hide for a good two days.

Interesting. He seems to be the odd snake out. He just roams and roams feed day until he gets his food. Then his tank feels a ghost town. Lol

my Elphie is an active nocturnal snake. she likes to climb, burrow, explore and just hang out in the open after dusk. so i can't say she's active before feed, but if she's not out of her hide at night, she will poke her head out of a hide if she smells food.

two of my boys - Ozzy and Boq - are very active and i believe are hunting leading up to feed day. i can see them looking for prey in the day before and day of. as soon as they eat, they may explore for a bit more but end up back in their warm hide and i won't see them unless they're thermoregulating or the next feed day (or unless i pull them out to handle).

my other snakes are shy. even though they may be balled up in a hide before feed, they will eat immediately when offered and then go back to hiding.
    RIP Mamba

Are you feeding him in his everyday home? Maybe the mouse or rat is leaving behind a smell and hes hunting for it?.

My Sadie gets active a couple days before feeding day but as soon as I put her back after feeding she disappears for a day or two. Jynx on the other hand is a little active, but more so when he sees me bring the feeding tubs into the room, then hides once he's done. I think it is just personality quirks of the individual snakes.

How much does he weigh? You are probably under feeding him.

Hard to tell from the pic but a hopper mouse seems too small. Also when they try to eat the prey sideways it's usually another sign it is too small for them.

I've been noticing a difference with my two. If not resting, they tend to just cruise around, but on feeding day, or the day before - they want OUT! Dusty started tapping the glass this afternoon. I gave in and fed them both one day early. This feeding was their first F/T. Both took the meal without any hesitation.
