Question UTH for 20 gallon High

I plan on getting back into the snake game. Had a couple of Ball Pythons when I was young and uneducated. I know the practical side of either a tub / T8 type of set up, less constant fighting to keep the Husbandry up, but I wanted to have a full glass front. I have a 20 gallon high tank (24.5" long X 12.5" deep X 16.5" tall). I have everything I need for the set up, with the exception of the UTH, and a heat lamp. I have built a lockable screen top covered in 90% removable plexi glass. I have a few different pieces of plexi glass cut, some with no holes and a few with some so I can change as needed for humidity purposes.

Here is my question, I'm on the 3rd floor of an apartment in Illinois, in the winter with the heat off, ambient heat is still around 79* - 81* (pending if a window is open to cool down the apartment), and in the summer with the "window units" on, it's as cold as 77*. I have taken multiple measurements around the apartment (in bed rooms, living room, hall way with a digital thermometer to measure temps and humidity. I will leave it in that location for a day or two and check the "highs and lows". There is no sweet spot in the apartment. I already have a thermostat and dimmer for the enclosure. But I am unsure on the UTH size, Petsmart has a "All Living Things / Snake starter kit", comes with a small UTH, ceramic socket heat lamp and bulb (75 watt), digital cheap thermometer (wouldn't hurt to have an extra in the tank anyways). The "Small" UTH doesn't look like it will cover 1/3rd of the floor space. Should I step up to a medium UTH or just play with different substrates, and dimmer settings on the heat lamp, assuming the hot spot is at 88* - 92*?

I plan to get the enclosure set and running for a month before the purchase of the snake.

Thanks for your help in advance,

    Steve.

I'm not sure how much the snake kit your looking at costs, but I would rather buy the parts separately online. You want roughly 1/3 , not exactly. I would check out reptilebasics.com. they sell ultratherm pads and also assemble heat tape.

Do not bother buying the snake kit. I got it and everything in it was crap -.-. I still use the lamp, heat mat, and tank, but that's it. It doesn't save you any money because you have to buy digital thermometers/hygrometers, thermostat, a stronger bulb. Now I keep an eye out on the local reptile groups on Facebook and posts on craigslist. Today I'm going to pick up 3 10-20 gal heat mats for $25. I wish more thermostats would show up.
