Super black pastel and Albino super black pastel (blizzard), what the deal?

So my daughter's and I have been searching for additions to our amateur breeding program and with the aid of the calculator, we stumbled across these little gems. We love the solid brown/black and the solid ivory/white little possibilities. Now granted the only ones we have seen are thanks to Google and the only info we have read about them is what is available on the net. The only complications we have read about is the potential duck bill that does not seem to be that bad or common of an issue.

What we don't get is based on the calculator simply breeding our male to a black pastel het for albino, we have fairly good odds of making both. So creating these little gems does not seem to be that difficult nor expensive. So why is it in our searching over the last month or two, we have not seen any blizzard morphs available and only 1 super black pastel and it was 1000.00 for a 500g female? Are we missing something here? Is there any reason we would not want to breed for these?

I don't think your odds are as good as you think. A black pastel x black pastel will deliver only potentially 25% super black pastels. Then a albino x het albino potentially gives you 50% albinos. Then you have to figure what the odds are that you will hit the super black pastel AND the albino in the same single baby. That drops the odds below the 25%(lowest odds out of the two forms).

So if you get a typical clutch of 3-6 good eggs, you might hit that super black pastel/albino combination but genes are tricky and the potential of getting 25% supers doesn't actually mean that you WILL get a super for each 4 eggs. It just means that each egg has a 25% chance of being a super.

Add to that, most people don't like super black pastel/super cinnamon because they still think they're ALL duckbilled, even though I've seen quite a few perfect examples. Then adding in the albino means it's longer odds and you can get a snake that looks like a lucy(with red eyes). You can get a lucy much easier with mojave, lesser, fires, etc. So unless you're really into the red eyed lucy, there's not as much incentive to go through all the breeding to get the super black pastel albino.

But some folks like it enough to make it, and I saw one nice example at Daytona too. So if that's what you've got your heart set on, you go for it. You should breed what you're passionate about breeding.

This is exactly why I snatched up mine this weekend from an odd Craigslist ad I happened to see. Besides she's now a huge part of my breeding project. At almost 1800g I can't imagine what "real" market value would be. I have to agree with the other response too. It seems easy, but I bet it just does not happen that often. As for your plans, I'd like to know why a regular BEL would not do though. Do you really want the red eyes? I'm just curious is all, no disrespect intended.

We like it because our male and female are my daughter's pets. We were looking at what we could add to the program involving what we have. The lucy with red eyes and the all black super looked really nice. We figured we could breed our male to either two black pastel het albino or an albino black pastel and a super black pastel. The latter option obviously would cost more but we would get better odds. Either way is a win as most of the babies at minimum would be black pastel or pin with a slim chance at a normal.

This is really just a hobby, not trying to make a ton of money. But is we can make a little to off set the cost of the food and misc expenses it would be a bonus. To do this we are trying to pick animals we like while at the same time pick animals that will have value to others as well since we plan on selling some of them.

Thanks for the input. Much appreciated.

Re: Super black pastel and Albino super black pastel (blizzard), what the deal?

The odds of hitting a blizzard from a black pastel het albino x black pastel het albino are 1/16 meaning one in 16 should be a blizzard but in reality you could produce 50000000 eggs and get not a single one.

The thing to take in consideration with Super Black Pastel or Super Black Pastel Combos whether it's the Blizzard or Panda is that it contain Super Black Pastel.

Some People refuse to work with super due to their issues and those who do are more likely to experience issues, this means not many healthy animals are seen on the market even if Black Pastel have been around for a long time and the first Blizzard was hatch in 2008.

Very cool actually. My daughter and I are working on plans for one down the road. It's great to see you and yours doing the same.
