Question for those who hook train

Hey All,

Just picked up a baby albino burm yesterday. I am going to make an effort to hook train from the beginning. In the past when I hook trained, they were much larger already, and weren't using hides. My question is, when the snake is in his hide, do you pull the hide off of him, stroke him with the hook, and then pick him up? Or do you try to gently hook the snake and pull him out of the hide? I see both situations being stressful, and was wondering if y'all had experience with this.

Ive read currently that there is a debate whether burms ever need a hide, but I thought as he is still a hatchling having a few in the viv would be best until he puts on some size.

I have no experience, however it seems to me that it would be less stressful to lift the hide off rather than try to fish him out.

While I don't have giants, I hook train my BCI. When it comes to hides, usually my BCI have their head and neck outside of it looking around. Whether they do, or they don't, I always remove hide, then rub head/neck until they seem relaxed. much safer than trying to remove them out of the hide (my RBI hides are too light for that anyways), and I do this even with my bigger 6+ ft BCI also (who is the one that actually needs hook training for safety reasons).

When my retics are in their hide I lift it up rub them with the hook and get them out then. My burn is good size already so o can't speak on burms specifically.

Yeah I was thinking that pulling the hide off might be best too. I was also thinking of judt adding s bunch of fake plants and other clutter and have that be the hides. So I could have easier access to him.

My retic doesn't usually use any of her hides, she prefers curling up on top of them, or inside her fake plant. When she does use one of her hides, I lift it off her and rub her with the hook and she usually calms right down. When she uses her humid hide it's because she's in shed so I try not to bother her at all.

I assume it would work just as well with a Burm.
