Although I'm from WV I work a lot in the ohio region, and I don't want to see this type of legislature move south to my area, nore the residents of ohio have to deal with laws! I agree with USARK, if this isn't stopped now it will spread like wildfire. I urge everyone to voice their opinion, and help stop this very narrow minded law!

What has been the outcome of this so far? If it isn't too late, I will gladly send in an email. I didn't see this before, unfortunately.

Re: ACTION ALERT: Niles, Ohio
Last I heard was no new ordinance was proposed. That was from someone local, not from USARK.

When has voicing your opinion ever stopped this kind of thing? I would love to know a law that wasn't passed simply because a group of people asked it not to... (I am referring directly to the herper community of course).

I'd like to say we had a pretty good impact on HR669 and S373/HR2811 with a strong letter writing campaign.

Just look at the USARK website, they are having wins. Evenin in my home state they helped removed many Herps from the "dangerous animal list"

I imagine it would go like this: "All reptiles and exotic animals"- some kids leopard gets confiscated but meanwhile Mrs. Bertha gets to keep her 30 Persian cats and Belgian mountain dog....

Niles is a non issue at this point. We knew that there wasnt anything written as of yet and by the sounds of it there wont be. This is what happened to get the whole thing started. Someone had a large constrictor outside and the neighbors called the city about it. The Public Safety Director called for a committee to review the citys exotic animal laws that were already in place to see if anything needed to be done. At this point there is no actions required. I addressed the city council about further possible bans and was assured that they have no intentions of adding to what the state has already set forth unless it truly becomes a public safety issue. I stayed long after the meeting talking to the council members that were part of the committee. The entire thing seems to have been blown a bit out of porportion. They are happy to fully investigate and do the research to make an informed decision prior to putting anything on the table or in writing. The head of the committee has my contact information and the information to contact USARK - United States Association of Reptile Keepers in the event that they need guidance toward any future decisions on reptile/exotic keeping within their city.
