hey everyone,
Last thursday I got my heating and thermostat delivered and today I got the tubs (30 3/4 x 22 x 7).
With a bit of luck I am getting the wood tomorrow, the shelfs will be made from melamine but I am not sure what to do with the sides, use some 2x4's or should I make the sides closed?
Are the snakes gonna experience more stress if the sides are open? or should that be no problem?
the other racks I have are completely closed at the sides but they weigh a lot and it would cost a lot more money as to using some 2x4's for the sides.
( ps 2x4 are just wooden poles right? I libe in the Netherlands europe and we use different names for those things haha)
thanks, Andrew

When I built melamine racks they were enclosed on three sides. But they were INCREDIBLY heavy. I had a ten slot 41 qt melamine rack that was absolutely unmovable without two people and a dolly. No, 2x4s are pieces of wood that are two inches wide, by two inches high, and variably long.

The one thing I found that you can count on about Balls is that they are consistent about their inconsistentcy.

yeah I was thinking of leaving the sides open and use the 2x4s as the standing poles wich hold the melamine shelfs, for the exact same reason as you mentioned, the get so enormously heavy when closed on 3 sides and ofcourse because it would be way cheaper
but my main question, would it be more sressful for the BP's to be in a rack with open sides? might be a dumb question as there are professional rack builders here in Europe that build racks that are open on the side but I would rather get your opinions on it then just do something

Re: hey everyone,
I have both types open and closed both work just the same. The fully enclosed one holds temps better in unheated rooms. An idea I had was to take some black cloth and staple it to the out side to make it look enclosed.

thanks,
yeah I have been thinking about doing the same thing,
the rack is gonna be in a small room so that room is gonna get heat from the heating as well, without any heating that room is already at a steady 74.5 F so i do not think I'll be loosing to much heat en else I can place a small heater in there.
thanks again!
