When is it time to get a bigger tank?

    My ball is 10 months as of now;
    He feeds on large mice.
    He eats every week regularly.
    He sheds every month.
When I first got him, I was told to fill his tank because it was a little too room-y.
So I added a large branch in the middle.

But he has grown since 5 months ago.

The tank should still be ok for a while longer.

When you upgrade get a tub or "latchbox", not another tank.

You do not mention the size he is in. I would guess a 20g? Most of my males are, and usually stay around 600-900g. This small could probably live in a 20 gallon for most of his life. I have a friend who has a 1500g male who needs as big as a 40gal to be comfortable. The say your snake should not be able to wrap his full length around the cage, but the limit should be when his length fully extends the length and width once (L < like an l shape).

That looks to be a 20 gallon?
If so you probably wont ever need to get anything bigger.

Also the shed is not the best way to measure, it is already stretched.

Re: When is it time to get a bigger tank?

People generally keep males in 28qt tubs, so a 20 gallon tank would be fine.

If you do decide to upgrade, maybe purchase a PVC enclosure. They're much easier to keep proper temperatures and humidity in. And unlike tubs, you don't need to really worry about ambient temperatures in the room where the cage is.

    They also look pretty neat.

Here's an example of a PVC cage I had made for my first ball python.

    It's a 3'x2'x18".

Just a question, why are you wearing gloves when handling him/her.

Re: When is it time to get a bigger tank?

I know a lot of breeders use gloves. I don't know their specific reasoning.

Re: When is it time to get a bigger tank?

if its a breeder with a fairly large collection (or like 7+ snakes) its always better to think about biosecurity. Gloves help reduce the spread of diseases and parasites between individuals. kind of like a "herd-health" mentality to protect the overall health of the entire collection. but if its just a few snakes, I personally think it can be a little overboard, but to each their own...

Only IF you change gloves between every animal.
