my BP tank set-up

i have my home ready for a baby! it's an 18 gallon terrarium with aspen and moss substrate. it's got a tree (hot side) and log (cool side) for hides.

I was also thinking of putting in a landscape scenery for the backdrop and leafy plant.

(not pictured - 75watt infrared heat lamp.)









anything I'm missing that u would like to recommend?

1) Is there a heat pad?
2) Is it on a thermostat?
3) BPs can be pretty shy. You may need to take that cling plastic they do for fish tanks (on the outside) and cover the back and sides... Might make a snake anxious...
4) Are you measuring temps and humidity with those dials? They are useless. Digital FTW

1. yes, there's a medium sized heatpad under the tree hide on the left side.
2. will need to get a thermostat for it.
3. got it - back and side coverings go on the outside.
4. Yes. i also have a laser thermo meter (yellow/black thing in 1st pix) and will look into getting another digital.

Unplug the heat pad asap and do not turn it on until it is put on a tstat. The heat pad unregulated go well over 100° and can and will burn snakes. And I assume you don't need any unexpected vet bills.

There's no snake yet lol

@OP A thermostat is very important as those pads do get far too hot and can gravely injure a snake. The thermostat probe goes in b/w the heat pad and the bottom of the tank set at 90-91. Those dials are useless. Don't feel bad though, I bought them too. The laser temp reader is a good idea just to check things. Also, I suppose you could cover the top of the tank too. I've got an aquarium so most of my top is covered with foil to keep humidity in. Good on you for avoiding that whole thing and getting a nice enclosure Also just for note, go over those decor things and check for sharp edges, nail file or something. Just in case

Since the thermostat issue was already brought up I'll bring up one point about the fake tree. Is that one of the kinds that are all hollow inside including up into the limbs? If so you may want to reconsider it, do a search here for ball python stuck in fake tree and you will find several reasons why not to use those till they get a lot bigger.

@frosty - thanks. i went to 3 petshops yesterday looking for a thermostat including a local mom and pop joint. none had it in inventory. (i even visited an
"indoor gardening" store afterwards.) so i ordered the same one from the "How to set up a tank..." sticky from Amazon.

Making me a liar?! Lol. You don't need to cover the top unless you have heat issues and need foil to help retain. I just don't know if it would make a snake feel insecure with the open glass top I too had that thought about the trees. Don't want to have to try to cut them apart with a snake stuck inside.
