Feeding: strike and release?
Boots just shed yesterday and I brought home a rat for him. He coiled up and hit it pretty quickly, but then immediately let it go! Its ear is bleeding and he's just ignoring it. What just happened?

0.1 Albino corn
2.1 Ball Python(Sterling, Boots, & Eden)
1.0 Kenyan Sand Boa(Anakin)
0.1 Bearded Dragon(Beatrix/Trixie)
0.1 Kitty Cat(Willow)
1.0 Chihuahua(Panda-Bear)
2.0 Betta Fish(Finnley & Pescado)
0.2 Rats(Mishka & Laney)

Mine did that with frozen mice before but I don't really know why either.

That's a defensive strike. He doesn't want the rat and was trying to get it to go away. This is why I have boas and retics, if one of my picky live-feeder-only ball pythons isn't hungry there's another hungry snake available who will take it.

It looks to me like the rat may be on the big size for him, which could be why you're seeing the strike that you're seeing. He is probably hungry, but knows his eyes aren't bigger than his stomach.

I agree with Eric, the rat seems a little big.

I'm not so sure. That's a very small medium. He usually eats large :/

How big is he? I'd even say a medium is too big for him. Most males will thrive on small rats their entire life. Live large rats are very capable of defending themselves and will do some pretty decent damage to a BP.

Maybe...? I think 1800g  now that you mention it, he fed steadily on small rats and stopped when I switched
