    Proper thermostat probe placement?

I was told by person I purchased my first rack from, that I should keep the thermostat probe, that I should keep it about an inch or 2 away from heating tape. However, doing that, I'm realizing that the hot spots in my racks were hitting 92°F while ambient temp was 85°F. I'm questioning said person's advice, as thermostat is set to 88°F (VE-100).

What do you guys set your temps to? Where do you place the probe?

    Thanks in advance!

In the tub, directly over the tape... That will give you the perfect result.

    Re: Proper thermostat probe placement?

I put mine under the tub over the tape. I don't put it in the tub because I don't want my snakes to poop or pee on it.
Your going to hear different results about this so my advice would be to test a few and use what your comfortable with and what gives you the best results.

I would not suggest in the tub unless you have it empty and fixed in place. Seems a waste of space to me. I keep mine fixed on the tape with a scrap of an old lid between the probe and tape.

I would never recommend an on/off stat for a rack, the tubs are too thin and the stat will generate spikes. I would suggest a herpstat and use the VE as a fail safe in case the probe pulls free. (racks are prone to probes being moved out of place, stuff catches them) That is not good advise the heat (especially THG) gets quite hot you must restrict the hot spot and use the room as the regulation for the cool end / ambient temps. Racks save a lot of space, there is a price for that however.
