    tank for first snake. result

    Hello everyone

As some of you might have read my previous thread i am considering buying a snake. i am wanting your opinions on a tank or enclosure for the snake and although this may not be the result, I would like to buy just one for his entire life. Is there a certain size i can buy that would suit him well for his entire life or is it ideal to start small and expand as the snake grows? also, looking around my living room where the snake will be living if i could find a taller enclosure with a smaller width like some of these octagon tanks im seeing, would this be ok? if it isnt too much to ask you could post some pictures and specifications on enclosures for me it would be a big help! thanks guys

For a ball python you want more floor space than height as they spend most of the time on the ground in their hides. I've read that a 36x18x18 is the biggest you will need but I could be wrong. It's currently what I have my BP in. If you look up exo Terra large you should find what your looking for tank wise. That would be for a display enclosure which I would assume you would want

if your willing to put a bit of money into it animal plastics look good and work well for keeping humidity (i havnt got my snake yet but im relaying information that ive got from threads i started myself ) and as for expasion you can get dividers for them as well, so you could buy a larger one even for a baby then take the dividers out as he/she grows

    worth checking: http://www.apcages.com/home/

you can click on terrestrial cages on the left, im planning on getting a t8, after you click on t8 (ive heard t3 works too?) and then onthe far right they have a plastic divider addition for an additional 20$

again this is relayed information from other users that i trust, but its all good stuff

Those terrestrial cages look pretty decent. Lets say i wanted to get an terrarium, im looking at the large ones on their site right now and im wondering what would be best for my snake? i will list them with their dimensions and let me know what you guys think please

    (1) Natural Terrarium Large/Low

    90 x 45 x 30 cm / 36” x 18” x 12” (WxDxH)

    (2) Natural Terrarium Large/Wide

    90 x 45 x 45 cm / 36” x 18” x 18” (WxDxH)

    (3) Natural Terrarium Large/Tall

    90 x 45 x 60 cm / 36” x 18” x 24” (WxDxH)

    (4) Natural Terrarium Large/X-Tall

    90 x 45 x 90 cm / 36” x 18” x 36” (WxDxH)

Im hoping you guys dont tell me number 4 is the right one as taking a look around my house i dont know where i am going to put that haha. if it has to be number 4, it will be number 4.

I have 2 snakes a corn and a BP. They are both housed in exo terra glass tanks with screen tops. they are great, the double front doors allow me to feed and clean really fast. yes, in the winter I need to modify for humidity, but nothing drastic. I just block 50 - 75% of the screen top and add moss, my BP has a reptifogger and lots of moss, As babies i just clutter the tanks with hides and silk plants, and as they grow i remove the ones they don't use.Just make sure you leave one on the hot and one for cool sides. hope this helps.

So in your opinion would the Large/Low terrarium be ok? or would the Large/Wide be better?

I would never again buy a 12 inch tall front opening enclosure. If it has sliding doors and a lip top and bottom the opening can be quite small. Mine the opening is only 8" it is hard to get in and clean. I love 16" tall enclosures I have a number of them 18 is ok it is a bit too tall making heat and humidity a bit more difficult, although not impossible. I would avoid a top venting enclosure as this compounds the issue.

I would also avoid wood, wood composite cages. They have a shorter life span as they often start to come apart after a while. They limit heating options as well. PVC, PVCx, roto are superior and have a longer useful life.

Your number 1, the 12" tall one would not be a wrong choice. I have a smaller version of that cage (24" x 18" x 12") for an adolescent bp and it works fine when you cover the top to keep humidity in. Cleaning it isn't bad either because you can lift the entire top off.
