    Uth question

I'm planning on setting up a tank for my daughter's snake so she can have him in her room and not in our rack. I was planning on using a partially set up tank that had already been fitted with an UTH. It was originally set up for my snake Li. After I started coming here and realized I needed a thermostat for it I unplugged it and it hasn't been used since.

I was thinking about taking it off the bottom of the tank and reapply it to the side of the tank for her snake. I was wondering 1) with it on the side of the tank, should a thermostat still be needed? I'm guessing yes, but I was wondering on other folks thoughts on the matter. And 2) CAN it be removed and placed in a different spot? Or is it just stuck there?

    Thanks in advance.

It can be removed if done carefully. A good way to apply a uth is to stick foil to the stick portion of the uth and then just tape it to the cage. This way you can take it off without any issues and reapply it to another spot or cage.

Why do you want to move the uth to the side of the tank? The snake will get much more benefit from it where it is. If you do move it I would put it on a dimmer at least. But I wouldn't move it. I would set it up with a tstat and use it as it is.

    Re: Uth question

**nods** it was a thought that crossed my mind. I remember seeing the little insert with the pic of the uth on the side of the tank and I was curious.

I'll be ordering a tstat this next friday the hydrofarm one from amazon.com.

    Re: Uth question

It can be on the side for some creatures but not bp's as they need the belly heat. As long as you get a t stat you will be good

1- Yes it can but I would still use a stat
2- yes but after you get it removed plug it in and make sure it still works, then cover it with foil tape (sticky side to sticky side) and use foil tape along the edger to place it where you want.

Negative, they do not NEED it if the room is properly heated.

Definitely invest in a thermostat as the uth does get very hot , so hot you cant even touch it yourself. Also bp's do not need belly heat , in the wild they do not have that. Before uth existed people were fine just using heat lamps alone. But people use uth because it does help with digestion but again its not a must bp's can survive fine with just lamps .

    Re: Uth question

Oh i know re: getting hot. I did an experiment a few weeks ago. I plugged in the uth, no snakes in the tank mind you, and after a couple hours used my temp gun to see how hot it got. 110 degrees and climbing.

The is no way in hades I'll have any of my snake babies in a tank with an uth and no tstat!

Thank you all for your comments and input. I appreciate it.

Lol i remember when i was a kid and had reptiles, a guy who owned a reptile only shop who bred his own retics, burms, nile monitors and other big stuff designed domes out of blow molded plastic that fit over the top of glass tanks and had a light fixture in the top so it acted like a top and heater. He also made based for the bottom of tanked that were blowmolded and had a fixture in those that could fit those long incandescent pill shaped aquarium bulbs, the 20 or 25 watt ones. Those were the type of UTH i had growing up with reptiles. They actually worked decently for reptiles that fit in tanks. Big stuff like monitors and big boas and pythons, we had to use the big lamps with thick mesh screens over them. Reptile "gear" has come a long way since i was a kid

And yes, snakes don't need a UTH. The only snake i have used one for is my new little high white pied girl. Every other reptile I've had i used RHPs or ceramic heaters for and never had problems. Just don't use hot rocks as those are notorious for reptile burns.
