Talking First ball python is here!

Alright so this is my first ball python in a long time, I've had reptiles/snakes before, 3 ball pythons and a kenyan sandboa, and a turtle, oh and a blue tongue skink. For moving purposes I had to sell them off which sucked because I've always wanted to breed ball pythons but never really could due to work and moving around a lot. Anyways I'm actually thinking about breeding FOREAL this time so I got a Female bumblebee ball python because I've always liked the morph and I got a Lemon blast Male coming soon. I still have to get them up to size but it's all good. I also plan on breeding some cool leopard morphs.

Anyways the ball python I bought from "Morphs R us" is finally here and it got here in one piece, warm and poop free

This is the 16 Quart tub I set it up in, it has a ceramic water bowl, aspen bedding, and using a heatmat which is hooked up to a thermostat and I know the hide is a crappy hide I had to make out of cartboard and batman ducktape but it's all I had (LOL). I went to petco but they didn't have anything small enough for a 16 quart tub.

The thermostat is a "Hydrofarm jumpstart" and according to some reptile owners who use it, it works fine for what it's for. It doesn't dim the temperatures up or down but instead turns off the heat mat when it reaches the temperature you set it to and turns on again after it drops about 3 degrees below the set temperature. I have te probe in between the heatmat and the tub and have it set to 92 degrees which keeps the temperature inside the tub at 89-91 according to a ZooMed digital thermometer that I have sitting over the hotspot in the tub, lightly buried in the substrate.

I'm going to feed it a frozen thawed rat pup on Thursday or Friday. So yeah that's pretty much all I got for now, it's striking at the tub right now because it sees my hands move when I go up to it so i'm just gonna let it be for a little while.

Beautiful snake. One thing i do want to say though is you shouldn't use ANY tape in the enclosure as it can stick to the snake and cause problems. And best way to get heat mat temps is with a temp gun

Red face Re: First ball python is here!

Thanks and yeah I thought the same. My initial thought was that her tongue might get stuck on the tape while she was exploring around the tub and she might rip it off lol but I made sure none of the sticky part of the tape was exposed but you're right I'm ordering some reptile basic hides soon to replace the crappy hide. It's only temporary.

I wouldn't even keep the tape in there temporarily. I've heard and seen too many tape horror stories to ever risk one of my animals getting stuck on it. Google the injuries if you haven't and you'll see what I'm talking about. Look for anything else to make a temporary hide until you can get the other ones in. Plastic bowls, dark tupperware, even a small cut up cardboard box. If you have a home Depot nearby go to the gardening section and buy the plastic flower pot dishes and cut an opening in the side to use.

She's a gorgeous snake my first was a bumblebee also, I would hate for you to post that she got stuck to the tape and got injured

Thumbs up Re: First ball python is here!

Alright so you guys got me thinking and I don't want to risk something bad happening so I took the advice and made her a hide out of a belt buckle box. I cleaned it with some wet paper towels and made sure there were no sharp edges. Thanks for the heads up.
