So I have a front opening display cage that I use to house Nagini. It clicks closed, and as an extra fail safe I use a paintbrush through the place the lock would go. With something there it cannot click open without a switch being pressed on the outside of the cage. I have it covered with tinfoil on top to help control humidity and I'm always careful to double check everything after I have him out.

About 20 min ago I woke up for no reason. It happens occasionally, and usually when it does, I check the temps/humidity in his cage (which I do as frequently as I can. Living in Canada, even with a heat lamp, ambient temps are hard to control this time of year. I have a space heater that's used to keep my room nice and warm for Nags.) Upon doing so I was horrified to notice that the left hand door of the cage must not have snapped in properly. I went to bed and was fairly exhausted when I heard a long flatus coming from the cage. I had to get up, remove him, clean it, put him back in and I guess that when they went to close it I didn't seal it properly. FORTUNATELY, I saw a tail wedged behind the cage, between the bookshelf and the wall. I promptly rescued him, returned him to his enclosure, triple checked the catch on the door, triple checked the paintbrush and tried to calm my heart down. That could have gone way worse, especially given my propensity for messiness in my room. I might have never found him.

Also, I'm curious as to why snake poop is the Smelliest Substance on Earth.
