Transportation of Snakes
I'm in the process of moving. My new house is about 20 minutes from where I currently live. It's winter and the outside air temps have been in the low to mid 30's. I have to move my 3 snakes tomorrow, all are babies. I'm thinking of two possible ways to transport them.
1. remove them from their tubs and place them in individual cloth sacks which I'll place under my coat-keeping them warm with my body heat for the 20 minute commute. or...
2. keeping them in their tubs and placing the tubs in the heated car. I'd have the car parked and ultra warm and literally move the tubs from house to car a distance of about 20'.
I want to make the move as stress free on the snakes...
Your thoughts?
Thanks!

Re: Transportation of Snakes
Secured in a pillow case / snake bag, placed in a box where the bags are not sliding around.

The safest way to move them would be a combination of the two ideas you suggested. Bag them and place them into a tub or tubs (depending on how many and what sizes you're talking about). Or even better, place them into an insulated shipping box. A styrofoam cooler could work well, too. If they're well-insulated, they won't even feel the temperature shift from house to car. Pack them securely so that they can't shift around (ie: can't get bounced around if the car comes to a fast-abrupt halt). Have the car warmed up ahead of time...that's a good idea, but DON'T put them on the floor of the car near a heater vent. That space can get way too hot. If the car itself is warmed up to where it's comfortable for you, the snakes will be totally fine, especially for such a short trip.

Judy/Deborah...thanks. How does this sound. I have a Styrofoam cooler perfect size for all 3. Snakes in sacks, sacks in cooler, cooler in car. I'll fold a towel and place it on bottom of cooler as a shock absorber and one towel over the snakes to keep them from shifting. Cooler goes on front seat of car. Do the transport. =Keep snakes in cooler as tubs are warming up...snakes back into original tubs.

Thanks to both of your for your help! Since I'm on the topic of transportation. Let me ask you this:
I'll be going to a reptile show in Feb. deep winter where I live. It's about an hour and 20 minutes from where I'll be living. I'm actually going to be there looking for a used rack system...however should I end up buying another snake (can't imagine that happening) What's the best way to transport the snake home under those conditions. The cooler again with heat pack?
Thanks!

There is someone I know who learned her lesson the hard way about putting a ball python on the floor under a heater vent!!!

Same setup, just with a heat pack. I actually have one of the extra thick foam coolers they ship frozen steaks in for going to shows, even in a cold car it stays plenty warm inside with a good heat pack.
Where are we going, and why am I in this handbasket?
Never argue with idiots. They will drag you down to their level and beat you with their experience.
