    Greetings from Lurkerville.

Here's a cleaning substance question. The other day, I came across a forgotten bottle of Simply Green under the sink, & I got to thinking. Would this be a good tank cleaner? The label states that its biodegradable (which is good, of course, but it doesn't always mean its healthy for animals), and I was curious as to your opinion.

My alternate choice (and one I think I'll go with) is Nolvasan. I've worked w/it before and like it, but I never would've thought it'd be good for tank cleaning.

    Thanks,
    LC

Im sure it would work fine .. but just like with bleach or any other house hold cleanser, detergent, disinfectant you would need to rinse it well with water . Id skip it if your using it on a wood cage

What is the known disinfecting agent? I'd be wary of any product not documented to kill viruses & bacteria.

I have a bottle right in front of me... but it doesn't list any ingredients. I use it to clean the white walls and aluminum rims on my car -- strong stuff!! Then again I use it full strength... maybe if you dilute it? I guess I have no idea... I'm kind of afraid of it, personally, after seeing what it can do for 20 year old rims

Melissa Kaplan has a page dedicated to the subject of cleaning, and as far as I remeber it does discuss Simple Green. Here is the link http://www.anapsid.org/cleaning.html

Yeah, we used it on our old Nissan's rims, and it did wonders. It scared me too!
I just use a 5% bleach solution, and I make sure I rinse very thoroughly.

I have a question: what is the best method of cleaning wooden items that go in your cages? I have a few pieces of driftwood in my beardie's tank, and they get pretty nasty when he sits on them all day, but I do not want traces of bleach to harm him. Maybe nolvassan?

You can boil wood, then bake till it dries, that takes care of a lot of the problems in wood, it is a rather long process though

i think soaking it in the nolvasan/virosan ought to work pretty well. especially if you scrubbed it in hot soapy water first. i soak everything in hot virosan/water and it seems to work well and doesn't have any lasting smell.

mlededee is right, if you can find the nolvasan/virosan that should work well

Wow! Thanks for the url, padiente. Very useful information, especially for a soon-to-be (& slightly neurotic) newbie bp owner.
