Thermometer,Temp Gun and Herpstat 2 issue!!!
Ok guy so i keep gettin different temps on my heat devices
let me explain-
i have a herpstat 2 for my 4" THG Heattape and i keep it at 92.5 but my acuRite thermometer is reading that my hotspot is 96f and my PE2 temp gun read a temperature of 85.5 for my hotspot
in the cool side my accurite reads a temp of 79f
my temp gun reads a 75f
Anyone here know why im having this problem?
Which of my three devices is telling me the real temp:/?
I really need help this situation is driving me crazy !!
FYI- i have a rack system

Is the probe for the tstat and the probe for the thermometer in the same section of heat tape?
How are the probes secured? tape, glue, gum, hairspray, etc.
Are you using the temp gun on the bare floor of the tub or on top of the substrate?

I have the tstat probe in the middle of the rack right in top of the heat tape and the thermometer probe i have it inside the tub where my hotspot is and i have both taped with black electrical tape
also i have a another thermometer next to the tstat probe in the same place in the heat tape and its like 1.5 degree up then the tstat temp
im using the temp gun in top of the substrate cus the acurite probe is also in the top of the substrate

Make sure the tape is not covering the probe and is only holding the probe in place by securing the wire just behind the probe. Placing tape over the probe can trap heat and mess with your numbers.

Every thermometer will have a degree of error. This number is actually published in the details on most websites so this is normal.
im using the temp gun in top of the substrate cus the acurite probe is also in the top of the substrate
You should track the temps under the substrate on the bare tub floor. The probe laying on the substrate is not contacting fully to the heated area and is probably not getting heat properly to report correct numbers.
Remove all tape from inside the tub. Google Tape on Snakes to see the horrific damage it can cause to your snake. It is not pretty. Hot glue is usually a good choice as it is easy to use and easy to pull up. Just don't cover the probe, only secure the wire.

NEGATIVE................ you take the temperature from the surface that your snake can touch. This would be the floor of the tub because your snake can and will burrow.

Ooh im gonna remove the small peace of tape i have inside the tub
Maybe the problem is that i have a liece of tape in the probe itself instead of the wire
Im make sure i fix that and i hope it gets my numbers where i want them
I just have another question for you
If im supposed to put the probe in the bottom of the substrate how im gonna get the temp in the top of the substate isnt a loose of heat from bottom to the top of the substrate?

Ooooh ok I thought i should take the temps from the top of the substrate cus is where the snake lays all the time :/

Re: Thermometer,Temp Gun and Herpstat 2 issue!!!
The thermostat measures the tape thats being heated and pulses the power as needed to maintain the temp you have set. However, if the desired temp is 90 degrees on the inner tub surface, you may have to run the thermostat at 92, 94, etc., because some of the heat is lost in the transfer through the tub material. Raise the temp on the thermostat until the temp of the tub is where you want it to be with the gun reading. The temp gun is the more accurate of the two devices between it and the thermometer. The gun is good within several tenths of a degree.
Now once you have the temperature where you want using the gun, your thermometer may not read the same, but it shouldn't fluctuate all over the place. If you heat is stable then the thermometer reading should be stable. However, if your thermometer doesn't read the same as the temp gun but is within a degree or so, then just note what the reading is and use it to see that the temperature remains constant. In other words if once you have a reading with your gun at 90, if the thermometer says 92, just make sure it stays at 92. If it reads 88, the see that it stays at 88.
Trust the gun and monitor with the thermometer.
I hope that helps

Usually the substrate over the uth is only a 1/4 inch at most. This allows the heat to make it to the top of the thin layer of substrate.
This issue is if you have a thick layer of substrate then you will have to turn the tstat up to get the top of the substrate to the desired temp. This creates a dangerously high temp at the bottom of the tub and if/when your snake burrows it can be burned. Also having a thick layer of substrate insulates the heat and actually makes the heat greater than what the tstat is set to.
Having a thin layer of substrate allows the heat to reach the top but still allows the tub floor to remain at a safe temp if/when the snake burrow and lays on the bottom.
I have some bloods in a rack and two lay on top of the substrate but one moves it all out of the way and lays directly on the tub floor. Everybody is happy and safe because the temp at the bottom of the tub is kept at a safe level.
