    Completely confused about Rat

Ok, so have posted a few threads about this. Have tried to feed my 1000 gram female a small live rat I bought two weeks ago. Last week tried twice and everytime she struck at it but pulled back. However this rat either just sits and cleans itself or starts pushing bedding all over the tank very quickly. So I cleaned out the whole tank, bedding and glass. To see if a freshen up would work. She has been looking to eat for days now, but I made her wait until feeding day which is today. Just tried to feed her again tonight and she struck at it twice and pulled back. This rat acted the same way again pushing bedding right at the snake. Plus when she tagged the rat I think she hurt it as it was squeaking when I touched its shoulder. Plus the snake is back out again looking for food.

    so what should I do?
Get another rat as this is not working?
also what should I do with this rat, as it has grown quite abit in the last week and may be hurt.
Anybody have something like this happen?

Have you just started trying to feed rats? Why live? Was it eating something regularly before?

    Re: Completely confused about Rat

No she has been eating live rats all her life with the breeder. I bought her October 11th and she has eaten two of the same sized rats for me. Those two feedings were she did eat she had them wrapped up within 10 seconds of being in the tank. Nothing has changed, all conditions are good and she is very active. I just don't know what the issue with this odd rat could be?

I really don't know what the issue could be.

I can say that my BRB when I got it I was told that the previous owner had a terrible time trying to get it to eat. It should have been taking a medium rat but it showed no interest in them as live or f/t. I eventually found that it would slam a small rat so I stuck with those for a few months and then I moved it back to medium rats and have not had it refuse since. Maybe try a smaller rat and see what happens.

    Re: Completely confused about Rat

The odd thing is she seems so interested to strike and then does but does not follow through, plus the fact most rats will explore around and not just sit or try to build a nest which I think may also be throwing her off. I could be wrong, just wanted to she if anybody has had this happen. Also would it hurt to try another rat? And what to do with this one as it is well taken care of and keeps growing and could be hurt. Sorry for all the questions, just baffled

Well I would feed it to my blood python, aka The Black Hole. You could kill it and freeze it for later.

I would not try another rat for a few days or even wait til next feeding day. Offering to often can compound the issue.

I would try a different rat maybe a little smaller. And for the one you have.. donate it to another snake or put it to sleep with some co2 and give it to a dog or cat. Or a friend with a reptile.

Try smaller prey on next feeding day. Put it in there, turn all lights off and hide somewhere where she can't see you but you can still see her and the rat.
