My adult male was used to breed last year, is there a such thing as males getting cranky this time of year? There are no females here, he's kept by himself, 20 long tank, about 60% humidity, 80-82 cool side, 89-90 on the hot. He's 42" and around 900g.

He just shed a couple weeks ago, so he's fine from that end. In the last week or so he's gotten jumpy, head shy, runs into his hide when I open the enclosure, mouth closed hiss sometimes when I open the top, and over the weekend while he was out slithering around and as I approached him he pulled his head back quickly, I held my ground and he struck at me. I reflexively pulled away, he missed by a fair margin and it looked like his mouth was closed. Do they ever fake like that? I can't figure out what the deal is, he's been so well mannered, normally you can fondle his head however you want and my kids just love all over him, but suddenly he's jumpy. Any ideas, or suggestions?
