Switching to rats

I think I'm gonna start trying to switch Isis over to rats today. From all the posts I've read about it, it usually takes awhile. What can I do to get her to eat a rat? Also, she's about 22", is this about the right size to start feeding rats? Oh yeah, what size rat should I get?

Length doesnt have as much to do with prey size as does girth. If she is girthy enough to take the size rat above the size mouse you are feeding now, go for it. To get them switched over, you might try scenting the rat with used mouse bedding, or by rubbing a mouse on the rat. If you are feeding f/t, make sure to get the rat good and heated up.

Switching your bp over to rats should not be an issue really. It is usually switching them from live to f/k or f/t that can be an ordeal. However, some bp's WILL NOT take rats, so like me, it means having to feed multiple mice. As far as the size of rat, look at the thickest part of your snakes body, use that to decide how big of a rat to get. Length of your snake IMO does not have anything to do with the size of the prey item. I am sure you will do well, so dont worry about it too much. Hope this helps.

Ooh, thanks for all your advice, but it looks like she probably won't eat anything anyway, I opened her tank today and her eyes are all blue, oh well, should I try anyway? If she refuses I'll try again after she sheds. ;-)

Shedding can be a stressful time for ball pythons, I think it would be better to wait until after she sheds.

alrighty, sounds good, how long does it usually take after the first time their eyes turn blue-ish?

Usually about a week. Their eyes will clear up after a couple of days, then a couple of days later they will shed. Make sure you have you humidity good and you should have no problems. Good luck and keep us updated!
