I would start searching the forum and do a lot of reading. If your stuck on a tank that's fine, I still have two. However they can be hard to keep your humidity and heat in check. We have to modify them to work well for snakes.

I would check into tubs. They are cheap so up sizing is not a big deal. They are also easy to clean and hold humidity well.

I'm not knocking tanks though but using tubs might be better for you starting out as it could save you some money that could go into a nice enclosure down the road.

Tubs can be used without a rack system.

I don't know at what weight or length a 20gal will be to small. Ive never had one that size.

Depending on how you feed and how the animal eats I would say you can get maybe 2 years out of a 20gal. The rule of thumb is that the animal should not be longer that twice the length of the enclosure so whenever it is getting close it's time to start shopping.

Re: first bp and tank question

I posted this in another thread a day or two ago regarding upgrading:

"You can always invest in a PVC terrarium like Animal Plastics. With a RHP (radient heat panel) heating the enclosure, you wont have any heating or humidity issues. The whole setup (terrarium, RHP and proportional thermostat) might be a bit pricey at first but it's worth it in the long run."

Here's a link to the PVC setup thread: http://ball-pythons.net/forums/showthread.php?t=165571
