What size rat do I need?

We have been feeding our BP adult mice for ages now even though he had outgrown them. We bought too many so he has just been getting 3-4 per meal. He is now about 3.5' long, no idea how much he weighs. I would like to switch him to rats but am not sure what size. I have to order online so there is no way to see them first. It looks like rat pups are roughly the equivalent of an adult mouse. So would rat weanlings be a good size to try? Or would I be better off going to a jumbo mouse?

I would start with some weaned rats, but if you're feeding 3-4 mice per meal your snake may take a small rat with no problem. Without knowing his weight it's hard to answer this question. Length doesn't really help, but if it's an adult I don't see why he couldn't take a small rat unless he's underweight.

If it's 3.5 feet it sounds like it probably full grown. If you feed weekly you can do small rats. If bi-weekly a medium would do. You could also post a pic with something in it to reference its size but most likely smalls will be good.

Also know sometimes it can be tricky switching it from mice to rats.

Re: What size rat do I need?

My male is a 2013 - 736 grams about 2.5 feet I'm guessing and he eats small rats no problem. I would
check your pets girth and know they can eat up to 1 1/2 that size in comparison to a rat. Remember they squish the crap out of the rat, and it reduces the circumference of them when swallowed

My rescue was about 3.5-4 feet she had a good weight on her and she ate live medium size rats. She was 3-4 years when I rescued her.
