    Male BP going crazy

Tonight when our male finished breeding, we put him back into his cage. He wasn't in his cage for more than 2 minutes when we heard thumping. We looked in, alarmed, and he was going nuts. Slithering around his cage quickly, thrashing. He spilled all of his water which is in a pretty heavy bowl. Is this a response to breeding? We don't have any other males, and he's never done this before.

    Re: Male BP going crazy

Here's a video of him after we moved him to another tub to get him out of the water he spilled. He definitely was calmer in this tub, but is still extremely active. We're concerned with how hard he was throwing himself around before we took him out.

That is male combat behavior. Also (at least form what I've seen) not normal post-breeding behavior. My males tend to search their cages a little after being returned, but not aggressively, and generally go right into their hides and bed down. Are you certain your female is a female and he wasn't still riled from having been with another male?

Or, for spider keepers . . . Do the male spiders ever mistake their own smell for that of another male?

    Re: Male BP going crazy

She's definitely a female. They've locked about 4 times now. No other males in the house. He calmed down a bit when we held him, but put him back in his cage as he started thrashing in our arms. He's quiet now.. but we are a little concerned about the behavior. Also, his cage was freshly cleaned, and it was another females old cage. We switch them around sometimes to encourage feeding, so I don't think he was smelling male in his cage when we took him from the female.

    Male BP going crazy

Combat!!! When you put the male back in his own tub he can smell a male, he doesn't realise that it his is own smell! My observation is that this is more common in bp's with the
    Spider gene

My bp Garfield likes to redecorate his cage after breeding. Scared the hell out of me a couple times cause there would be a huge bang. He knocks over all the branches.
