    Bad shed cause?

My girl had a bad shed but I can't figure out why. Her humidity is around 50-60% during the day and 70-75% at night, so it's not that. This her first bad shed. She took two months between this time instead of one. She likes to shed in her hide and I fed her the night before(I always offer in shed). I'm thinking the rat could have stretched the skin and those parts may have as snagged on things and shed to early. I'm also thinking her hide may have rubbed it off early too. She's never had any problem shedding in her hide before but it was also a bit too big until recently. I noticed the stuck shed was dried out along the edges but it was moist like it should be otherwise. It all shed off her belly, sides, head, and tail in relatively large pieces though. Only the skin from her back was stuck.

Not a huge deal to have a bad shed once in awhile; I think it happens to almost all of us a little soaking to remove it should do the trick.

To figure out the cause, I wonder... What substrate are you using? What type of hygrometer do you have? How large of a rat did you feed in comparison to your snake?

I got it all off. She's on newspaper. Digital hydrometer(forgot the brand, I'll check later). The rat was about 80 grams she's probably around 750-800 grams.

Hmmm. Newspaper is awful for "holding" humidity. Do you provide a humid hide? Regardless of what the hygrometer says, I'd provide one if you are using newspaper.

Also, rat sounds a little big to me, but maybe not. Just stick to feeding to the largest part of the snake's body, and no more. Some are heavy because they are long and slender; others weigh less but are chunky. You know?

During shed I turn whichever hide she seems to be in most at the time into a humid hide. The rat was a little big but that was because the smaller rats where we get them from are way too small.

To me it sounds like nothing to be worried about. I mean, it could be because of anything, and doesn't sound like anything is off from what you're saying. I guess you'll just have to wait and see if it happens again, and then investigate more!

Sometimes bad sheds happen. I have 5 snakes and i would say that 95% of the time they have perfect one piece sheds. I keep mine on newspaper and i dont change the humidity while they are in shed. Its nothing to really worry about as long as it doesnt happen too often.

What I do to my snakes and it helps a lot once they lose the eye caps and they are ready to shed I mist them with some warm water 3 times a day untill they shed and it always works. Not to much just enough to cover the body but not soak them
