Q: Humid Hide Substrate

Besides sphagnum moss, what other human hide substrates are there? I'm looking for something that isn't particularily messy.

http://www.ball-pythons.net/Sections...39-page-1.html there is some advice on makin a hide box on that link I think there is a wet paper towel in there I use a damp rag inside mine I change it every other day to make sure the hide stays clean though.

I don't think sphagnum moss is too messy really.(from what I've seen anyway)
Alternatives can be damp paper towel, or a damp rag, as already said.

Some have had success with a damp paper towel. The moss is not messy at all and it provides something nice they can burrow under in the hide.

Sphagnum is ideal because it's acidity helps prevent molds from forming - if you are vigilant in changing out the damp substrate on a regular basis (hot and moist = nasty growths) you should be ok - but I'd feel better with the sphagnum - just think of what a damp bath towel smells like after a day or two.
