How do I increase the temp in a plastic tub?!

I have a16q sterilite tub and it is nowhere near warm enough. I can't seem to get the temp above 77. This is our first tub set up. With our glass tank I can get the heat up with a CHE or heat bulb. I have no idea how to solve this problem with the tub. PLEASE HELP

If you haven't already, here's a great read on how to set-up a basic tub for BPs: http://ball-pythons.net/forums/showt...e-Basics-*DUW*

Re: How do I increase the temp in a plastic tub?!

The heat pad I have covers nearly 1/2 the tub but it isn't helping the ambient heat situation.
Keeping the room temp above 75 is not a possibility, at least not at night.

Re: How do I increase the temp in a plastic tub?!

    Hi,

It's also a fact that heatmats won't increase ambient temps much so measuring the surface temps of the tub and under the hides can give a truer reading.

I thoroughly recommend a temp gun - it's probably the most used piece of snake keeping paraphernalia I own.

Plus if you get one with a laser you can use it to drive cats nuts.

Thanks, I have one currently in the mail
So as long as my surface temps are on par, I can stop freaking out so much about the ambient temp?

I gave this advice in another thread. Pretty common problem.

If more heat is ever needed a heat lamp suspended on a lamp stand will work great with a tub. I kept a big blood python this way while waiting on pvc cages I ordered that took forever. You can actually create a nice hotspot and heat gradient with a lamp alone if needed. Its just important to suspend the lamp so the tub is not melted. I also used this method on young bloods when they were in quarantine. You can use a dimmer to adjust the heat or do as I did and just figure out what distance from the tub gives the proper numbers and lock it in there. That is how I adjust all my lamps. I use them for my ball, hoggy, and pacman.

I've never tried this with a CHE and a tub. I Do have a CHE that has been running 24/7 for two years now. They are much better than bulbs. I use the wire cage fixture with them. Some of the dome fixtures cause to much heat build up around the CHE base and cause them to burn out, just FYI.

Re: How do I increase the temp in a plastic tub?!

With a rack system you can use a small space heater to heat the room up to the right temp. I use a space heater when the room gets too cool at night sometimes but in the daytime my room heats up to about 80 on it's own. You can also close off the vents in the room so no cold air gets in. hope this is helpful!

77 ambient isnt something to worry over if you ask me, Aslong as they have there 88+ hot spot and its not dripping wet humidity you'll be fine, during winter/fall/early spring my ambient is anywhere from 76-78 and iv never bothered with a space heater. And all my snakes are just fine, never had any R.I problem either. Some even prefer it, as summer before i turn ac on they sometimes fast or turn away from food when the ambient is 80-82. and always on cool side during those temps!

Aswell heat mats dont directly raise ambient temps, but they will help increase due to.. well heat rising... but 1 thing i can suggest is covering the lid with the Tinfoil looking insulation. even the bottom can be placed on it. well help keep everything bit of heat inside.

Re: How do I increase the temp in a plastic tub?!

I aimed a lamp with a heat bulb at the tub and brought the temp up 5 degrees. Thanks to everyone for their help!!
