    is there another way

There is no other reliable way that I know of. And probing is perfectly safe if done by a professional and/or someone who knows what they're doing. If you really want to know, then bring it to a reptile vet and have them probe it. The only other way you can tell is by popping, but that is more risky and much easier to injure your ball python.
Of course there are little things that might make you think it's male or female. For instance, supposedly males are supposed to have stockier tails, while females have slender ones. Sometimes that's the case, but it's not for sure.
So yeah, probing is probably the best way for sure.

You should take your new snake to the vet anyway, just to get checked out. I know of a good one in our area (in Yorba Linda) that I take my snake Norbert to. She is very thorough and knows her reptiles. She should hopefully be able to probe your snake for you.

But if you get your snake from a good breeder, they may have already determined the sex of the snake.
