    2 new females!!

I just picked up 2 female rats today, kind of an impulse buy haha, but both are about 2 months old

    here is Ziva

    here is Kiara

if anyone knows what colors these would be considered let me know! I know ziva is black and white but is she anything specific?

    Hello shorty!

Your B/W rat is a standard coat black variegated.
Your second rat has what is called Amber coloring (golden fur with red eyes)- but some rat purists would just say you have a cinnimon blaze or a cinnimon husky (ambers are solid and have a much more vivid red to the eyes, not as much as albinos- either way i cant tell if the eye coloring is just your camera). Unfortionately there's a good possibility that this pattern (esp the face blaze) will become much less apparent when she becomes older

Kiara looks more like beige to me than Amber. Beige have the Ruby eyes, amber have pink eyes and are ticked (pink eye dilute gene on agouti). As for markings, neither are quite up to standard. I wouldn't call ziva a variegated, those are supposed to be more spotted than solid on their back. I do expect she could produce some decent variegated with the right mate. Many in the rat world would call Her markings "varieberk", which isn't a standard term just s phrase used to describe markings somewhere between Berkshire and variegated. I would describe Kiara's markings the same, though she had less of the silvering on the edges.

Lol I know what you mean!
I'm pretty well versed in rat color, markings, patterns, and genetics, but only because I bred them for 10+years, had them for pets 10 years before that, and I'm a scientist.

Now ask me about ball python colors and patterns. .. "um its a pretty orange and black one. " hehe

Haha exactly.. i could tell u all about the ball python morphs but when it comes to rats I am completely new at it. I have never actually bred them so once these girls are big/old enough they will be my experiments on breeding haha... but I am excited to try breeding them and hope that I will be able to get some pretty unique looking babies.

its a lot of fun, and you can see progress so much faster than with snakes. I'm playing around with colors and markings now that I'm breeding just for myself. Trying to get some nice variegated and dalmatian, and well in my way. Started with Berkshire in varying degrees. I'll need to post some pictures.

    Teach me your ways!

IDing colors is something i need to improve on, is it okay if I contact you with some questions about upcoming litter coloring?
