    BRB setup

My wife bought me a rainbow boa for valentines!
it will not ship for a while due to the weather so I have time to get set up for him.

i was wanting to put him in a tub using paper towels. Anyone out there using this setup? Just curious to see how you set yours up to give me a jump start on prepping for his arrival.

    thanks!

    Re: BRB setup

I know many people use the set up for the newspaper/paper towel... people have been very successful, I don't though. I use eco earth and repti bark mix with sphagnum moss; it keeps the humidity up well and he burrow's himself in the substrate. I do keep mine in a tub like yours. Mine is 100 qt. Its a longer so I need to use binder clips to keep the lid secure from any escape artists snakes.. I would suggest it if yours is longer too... (?)

I have 1 real hide.. BUT I have PLENTY of natural hides made by fake plants. (If you need to know how to make hanging hides just ask!). I found clearance fake plants at hobby lobby. One is like a bunch of leafy/mossy (thing) that lined the enclosure. Then I have hanging plants that make my brb really secure and a place to hang (he really does hang on them). He rarely uses the real hide. Some people also like to have a humid hid. It's filled with moss.

I have a big water over the heater to boost up humidity (make sure it is big enough so s/he can soak themselves.

Make sure you have a temp gauge for your heat pad and a thermometer and a humidity gauge. Make sure you have the temps and humidity at right.

I know this some of this may be obvious but no one else has replied so.... I just put all that I thought should be put down i guess.

If you have any other questions PLEASE ask! I hope you really like your brb when it comes in. I really like mine

    Re: BRB setup

Great info, I didn't realize you had replied until now. I am getting a 6 month old so I think he is still pretty small. I'm going to start with paper towels and if that doesn't hold consistent humidity, ill probably change over to eco earth. I just want to try and keep the humidity up without constant misting.

I have just found a GREAT solution to keep you from constantly misting! I am so excited to share it >

Aquarium Bubble Stone. They are originally for a fish tank but I put them in the water dish and it rises the humidity way up! You can get them at walmart for about 2 dollars. You will have to buy the clear tube and an air pump. I got all the stuff at walmart too (You can get them at a pet store, but it will be more expensive...). The air pump was the most expensive thing and I got the quieter one for $14. I got this whole set up for $18. I just got it today and my humidity is up at 90%! You will have to drill a small hole in the side to get the tube in.

Now since I just got this today, I haven't been able to experiment with it yet. Since the humidity is up pretty high, I am going to turn it off at night, then turn it on in the day to see if that works. Or I might just have to get this valve to control the air flow. But I think it would work really well no matter what substrate you have.

Right now I am really happy with it, but as I said I haven't had it set up long enough to run into many problems.

*I found this idea on a forum too..

Oh, I'm sure you may have seen this already, but just in case here is a care sheet for a brb:

Thats cool! Very interesting. I may try that and put it on a timer to dial it in...

I you are putting him in a tub it should hold humidity nicely if you don't put too many vent holes. If you had a tank with a screen top obviously you would need to mist quite often but if you have a plastic enclosure with a few holes to vent but don't overdue them the humidity should stay in for a few days. I got my pair in home made tanks with sliding glass doors on the front and the walls are made of plastic so it is pretty much enclosed in beside the little gaps from the glass and I added a couple rows of vent holes on the back of the tank. There is enough for air flow but it is still pretty contained. I only use paper towel substrate and I only need to mist really well every few days. The tank doesn't always look "damp" but you can still feel the humidity if you open the glass.

Also you should really put a humid hide in the enclose. I got one in there so they can always get that extra humidity if they want even if the tank is freshly mister or a little dry.

    Re: BRB setup

Good info and thanks for the tips! I bought the tub and set up the UTH and accurite gauges already. I have the hot and cold side set now so I am going to get a water dish, moss, and hides hopefully in the next couple of days. Once I have all that I'm going to start trying to stabilize the humidity. If I can't get the humidity stable, I will install the pump\bubbler in the water dish and put it on a timer. I just want to make sure I have his enclosure ironed out before his arrival so he can settle in as smoothly as possible. Btw, sorry for the slow reply. I need to find out how to setup email notification to thread replies. The only way I know if someone replies is to check the thread...
