Can someone tell me why this wouldn't work as a snake rack?

It looks like the perfect snake rack to me after a few modifications and for 12 bucks seems extremely cheap as well.

Mounting heat would be your first issue. None of the separations thick enough to properly disperse heat would fit properly in this thing. Heat tape can't be exposed to the critter inside, so if you put it on the bottom of the middle rack, for example, the snake in the one below would still be able to touch the tape on its own ceiling.

Seems like you'd be paying a lot more than $12 in order to make it work like one would hope.

EDIT: Also, I have the suspicion that they would warp in any kind of direct application of heat. Perhaps not with the proper heat levels, but if a thermostat goes haywire, burning/melting plastic is the least of your problems.

That was my first thought, but can you rig the tape to give each rack back heat?

Wouldn't like thin hardy board create a suitable surface to heat on?

I just happen to have one of those sitting right beside me that I store papers and such in. I have toyed with the idea of making something like these a rack but decided against it. You can't really tell by just looking at it but if you feel in between the tubs there are fairly large gaps in between one tub and the other. Plenty of room for a small snake to get out of easily. And though I wouldn't say that they have much room for a lets just say juvie ball python, as flimsy as these things are a persistant one that size could probably push itself into that gap also.

Heat is a no issue since you don't need a hot spot if you heat ambient warm enough(I.e. ~85).

Or back heat on a board you can attach to the back.(radiant heat from the board than actually attached to the plastic)

However, those are not secure enough to house a snake. They would escape pretty easily.

While you have the top or the middle bin open, the snake in the lower bin and stick its head up and possibly get injured when you close it.

I strongly discourage using that tub system. I have a first hand bad experience with them. While cleaning my snake tubs I placed a 1000gm female in the middle portion of the exact same type. Only to come back and find that she had managed to squeeze herself halfway out. We were able to break the thing apart and get her out. However, she suffered a prolapsed rectum and died as a result of it. I never would have imagined that tiny space was enough to get through. I was wrong.
