    Anyone have a rosy boa?

    Hi am a newbie here...

I currently have 1 female baby BP named 'Kahlua' who is wonderful & why I decided to join ....

Today I picked up a baby female albino Rosy Boa [my Xmas prezzie ] & saw that you guys have sub-forums for other snake species which is awesome!

So does anyone on here own a Rosy? Seems like not too many people have them...like I said I just got her today & she is amazzzing!

Pretty sure I have her set up perfect [i had been eying her at the shop for a while & researching etc.] but seeing as you don't hear too much about them would be cool if ppl can give me their personal experiences with them? Set-up etc. just the species in general...anything you'd like to share?

Heres my new baby girl...I think I'm going to name her 'Annie' coz shes a red head & even tho I'm sure a lot of reptile people may not see it & will think I'm crazy, but to me her face kinda reminds me of a mini anaconda [i LOVE anacondas but could never own one lol]

Hope these work, still figuring things out...they aren't the best & totally don't show her cute face as they were taken with my phone...shall have to get some on my new cam [another Xmas prez ]

She was the only one at the shop [& had a REALLY good price tag for an albino] & they told me I was lucky I came in when I did as a lot of people had been looking at her & saying they were going to come back to get her either for Xmas or New Year.

    She's adorable! Congrats!

And, yep, I have a rosy boa. Unfortunately I don't have any current pics of Kira, but she was my first snake. Still have her coming up on 17 years later

Wow thats awesome! What are your temps...when I was researching I noticed there was some variety in what the best temps for them are. I wanna make sure my girl is 100% happy. So far shes stayed in her hide which I take as a good sign

Am using Aspen for bedding so she can burrow & to keep humidity out. Then I saw using a water dish for them is also controversial...so I have just provided her with a very small one on the cooler side. Wondering if I should take it out tho.

Well, for a hot spot, I shoot for 90 as the highest temperature she can possibly reach. Sometimes she wants to get that hot, but rarely. My rosy is typically on the cool side unless she's just eaten, then she basks. She's in winter cool down at the moment, but for most of the year, she has a ~90 degree basking spot provided by a light bulb during the day (off at night, or colored bulb . . . to be honest, I kinda wing it depending on ambient temperatures) and a cool side temperature in the low 70s. When we reach the upper 70s in summer, I remove supplemental heating.

In a smaller cage, I'd be going for a basking spot of more like 86-88ish.

I, too, have her on aspen, with sticks to climb on and both warm and cool side hides. I've heard the water thing, also -- Kira always has access to fresh water. But, I'm keeping her in a 20gal long with a screen top for airflow. Being able to curl up in a snug hide or go under the substrate really seem to let her regulate her personal humidity just like heat.

Hopefully that was at least a little helpful. The biggest thing I try to do is give her plenty of temperature choices.

I just saw this thread. I have two rosy boas!
I got them last year when they were just days old, from a coworker who was given a pregnant snake. Their mom is a Mexican, their dad a coastal (don't know which locality). The two snakes I have look different from each other, one more brown and the other more red. They are very lovely snakes, I absolutely love them.

I actually don't do too much for them in terms of heating, but that's because I live in their natural range. In the summer time the room they live in stays hot enough to keep them happy. Last winter I kept heat on them just because they were so small and growing. This winter I'm watching temperatures to see what happens. So far I have not had a need to put heat on them, and they've still be active and feeding. It's been a weird winter, with quite a few warm days and very little rain. They are big enough they could brumate if it gets cool enough.

Why keep a snake? Why keep any animal? Because you enjoy the animal, find something beautiful and fascinating about it, and it fits seamlessly into your lifestyle.

Thanks for the replies...yes am SOOOOO happy she shed!!! ...I've never seen a snake go wrinkley like that before unless its lost loads of weight or something! Very unusual, but now I know its a Rosy thing & if it happens again, no need to worry.

Shes still a tiny baby, so I have her in a 10galllon & have a 60watt basic basking bulb on one side then the cool side temp is about 70. I was a bit worried it would be too hot as the tank is on the small side, but its a low wattage bulb & I heard that if its too hot she would be restless...but she seems pretty chill in her hide. She has a large rock hide which takes up most of the tank, she stays in it during the day. Then a small water dish on the cool side & I just got her some grape vine logs which I'm going to put just randomly in the tank...or I may arrange them to make another hide or something as I read in the wild they like to hide out in crevices etc.

Shes pretty active at night, I see her crawling up the side of the tank looking for a way out lol she LOVES to be out of the tank exploring. Shes like a wriggley little worm when I hold her.

I never thought I'd have a Rosy boa lol but as soon as I saw her in the shop I just fell in love haha

Re: Anyone have a rosy boa?

I have one adult male whitewater rosy, and will soon by getting a female albino coastal as well.

I love them! When I first got into snakes I was convinced I was going to enjoy more active colubrids like corns more than I would boas and heavy bodied pythons, but after getting a rosy as my second snake I realized how much I preferred the slow calm nature of boas and pythons.

Rosy boas are one of my favorite species, and hopefully I'll be breeding in a year or two!

Good luck with your little girl! She's really cute
